Gangster No. 1

Netflix came through for me!

Huzzah!

Now for stream of conciousness esque commentary on Gangster No. 1, written as I am watching it.

Thewlis isn't that attractive, but he is so very fuckable. I really don't understand it. He has an odd mouth and an overlarge nose and a myriad of other issues that prevent him from being classical handsome, but I'd so do him. I think it is the way he moves. He's very graceful --and he has great hands. And a great voice.

I already knew I had a massive crush on Malcom, so the burst of glee whenever he comes on screen is no suprise. Even if he is old and wrinkly. I like old and wrinkly, two of the hottest men alive in my opinion are Iggy Pop and David Bowie.

Paul Bettany, though, is a god in man's clothing. Either that, or he has watched Clockwork Orange far too many times to be healthy. I kept on having "OMG, it's Alex moments. Not in a bad way, though, not at all in a bad way.

And his character is so homosexually in love with Freddie. I'm not far enough into the movie to figure out if that is supposed to be the case, or my slasher training is going overtime.
"Couple of blokes, sitting alone, is a bit suspect, innit?" Oh they know they are so gay.
And Paul's Character is so jealous of Freddie with the girls in the club. It's adorable. On second thought. No, it is not, because Bettany manages to make it absolutely terrifying.

What the fuck is with the random opening of the mouth and screeching into the camera, Paul? It isn't scary, it is just weird.

As for the (SPOILER)killing Lenny scene, I thought they overdid it. I think it would have been far more effective if we just watched him undress and then went to the end, covered in blood, with the lines he has in the film. Maybe even show the remains of the body.

Though, I must admit. Pretty scary as is.

The fire bits piss me right off. Director getting fancy and getting crappy, is all that is.

Malcom looks a little like a bum when he gets reunited with Freddy. And David Thewlis looks so old.

"Fucking Professor"
Heee Hee! Professor Lupin! *is two*

Overall, I liked it, though I had a few issues.

Someone needs to slap this director and send him to watch Clockwork Orange a couple of more times. The reason why Clockwork Orange and the rest of Kubrick's films worked so well is because they were really stylish, but also really seemless. Ditto with Citizen Kane and just about any other fantastic movie you could make.

The director's touch is everywhere, but it flows.

This movie didn't have that. The random camera angle changes weren't too bad, but the fire and the crackling of the screen is completely hopelessly bad. I hated it and it made me cringe whenever the director started getting "creative."

There were a lot of really good moments, mostly in the acting and writing.

Now, as for what I would have done differently.

I would have kept Malcolm as a voice-over but cut the end and begining stories completely. I would keep it entirely in the sixties and the bit where it leads up to 1999.

Then, the screen would go black and there would be a line of dialogue, "Freddy Mays is out of prison."

Or something like that, that was just quick.

And the whole confrontation would be dialogue only, no picture. And it would be short. We would start off with discussing Freddy's wedding, in like, one line.

"Now, Freddy my son. I'm terribly dissapointed about the lack of wedding invitations. How could you forget a good old friend like me, yeah?"

Or something like that. And then we switch right into a little Karen disparaging and the retelling of the story, with Freddy's mantra of "kill me, kill me."

Then, the picture comes up and the only thing we see is David Thewlis shooting Malcolm dead, with the angle looking toward Malcolm and over David. Camera zooms through David and ends on Malcolm's face. Credits role.

Now. David not shooting Malcolm is important for Freddy's character arc. This movie is /not about Freddy Mays/ it is about his sociopathic underling. And it is vital, in my opinion, that Malcolm's character get's the necessary closure of being truly claimed by his object of obsession.

Anywho, I'm not a real film director. That is just how I'd do it.

Two things I want after seeing this movie:

1) Fanfic about Gangster No 1. Especially Gangster/Freddy hatesex.
2) Malcolm Mcdowell in a romantic comedy, as a bashful, nice-guy type.
