I went to the park with Gracie again today. We have done our little Grant Park hikes in deep packing snow, frost, patches of ice, several varieties of mud and now, wet slippery snow. Today, the snow did me in.
There's a part of the trail where it goes down a pretty steep hill, across a bridge and then up the other side. The parks commission has been kind enough, given that it is so steep, to install wooden stairs. There are roughly 15-20 steps down and then an equal amount back up the other side. Well, I discovered today, those steps become quite slippery when covered in a layer of wet snow. I slipped and fell not once, not twice, but 3 times on the way down. The third time was pretty bad. I landed on my lower back right on the edge of one of those stairs. I am now bruised and swollen in several places including my left hand and knee. I am also very stiff and sore. What was worse was the fact that it was bitterly cold and by the time I got ot the bridge, my clothes were soaking wet. I still had about a mile to go to get back to my car too.
So, having no choice, I limped my sore, wet, self forward along the trail only to realize about 1/2 a mile later that Gracie had, at some point, lost her coat. We doubled back and found it about 15 minutes later. I put it back on her and we headed home.
Fun.
