1. How old are you? 27 2. What gender are you? Female 3. At what age did you become interested in Japanese culture? 23 4. What specific area of Japanese culture did you first become interested in (anime, martial arts, etc)? I am mostly interested with interpersonal relations. 5. How and when did you first learn of this particular aspect of Japanese culture? Made a Japanese friend and wanted to know how to relate better with him. 6. What interested you about this particular aspect of Japanese culture? I am interested in learning about different cultural backgrounds and find communication intrinsically valuable. 7. Are you still interested in this particular aspect of Japanese culture? Yes. 8. Did this interest lead you to finding more aspects of Japanese culture that you found interesting? Yes. 9. What were these aspects? Japanese cuisine, religious traditions and social ideas. Anime is very entertaining. 10. How did you discover them? Some from my own research and a lot from hanging out with my Japanese friend and his friends. 11. What about them interested you the most? These interests helped me get to know my friend better. 12. Why were you interested? It is interesting to find the things our cultures have in common (I'm from midwestern US) and the things that are decidedly different. (for example - individualism vs. collectivism) 13. Is there a common thread linking any of your interests together (i.e. I watched an anime with a catgirl in it and then I became interested in Japanese cat breeds, etc)? Not really - other than they are related to aspects of daily/social life. 14. Have you pursued any of your interests in a higher education environment? No, but I have considered it. 15. Has your interest prompted you to study the language? Yes. I have a beginner's understanding of the grammar, but only in romaji. 16. Have you gotten others interested in the culture? My friend and I helped other people who were also friends with us to understand more about the culture. 17. By what avenue did you introduce them to the culture? Talking about things I/we had encountered in everyday conversations. 18. Has your interest led you to explore other east asian cultures? Yes. 19. How so? I have friends who speak Chinese and have met some Chinese people. Also have befriended Filipinos. The cultures that I choose to explore tend to have a lot to do with the type of people meet in hopes of being able to communicate better with them. Also,it is interesting to see how different Asian cultures are from each other despite their similarities.
