MoonDAO sent a community member into space

A decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called MoonDAO sent a participant into space on Thursday, which is one of the biggest successes for such a crypto-crowdfunding project.
The DAO didn't send anyone - Kobi Cotton, a member of the viral YouTube stunt group Dude Perfect, was chosen in a Discord vote by more than 5,000 DAO members as his astronaut representative. DAO's future ambitions include hosting parties on the moon. Crowdfunding DAOs, which are groups of crypto enthusiasts who get together and buy a currency or an NFT token to raise funds to achieve a common goal, were more likely to fail than to succeed.

The genre was popularized in November 2021 by a group called ConstitutionDAO, which raised $40 million to buy an original copy The U.S. Constitution. Although the group was eventually outbid at auction by billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, it spawned a number of equally ambitious attempts to acquire high-value items that included groups trying to buy airships, blockbusters and even a golf course.

Cotton Dude Perfect traveled with five other astronauts as part of the Jeff Bezos-backed Blue Origin space tourism program, which has completed six of these missions so far, sending ordinary people into space for about 12 minutes each time. MoonDAO was able to purchase Cotton's ticket with the funds of his crowdfunding campaign, which has so far raised more than $ 8 million. The DAO's mission is to "decentralize access to space" with the ultimate goal of creating its own lunar colony, according to its website.

At the helm of MoonDAO is Pablo Moncada-Larrotis, an original member of ConstitutionDAO, who now hopes to learn from the DAO's mistakes in the new venture.

"I'm just a little in love with the idea of DAO in general, I think they have a lot of promise as a set of tools for collaboration and coordination on the internet," Moncada-Larrotis said in an interview. "When you buy an NFT, you know, it's pretty abstract. The idea that because of this you can be chosen to go into space, now it's interesting."

Like the ConstitutionDAO LINKS token, MoonDAO has MOONEY, a cryptocurrency issued in exchange for work done to support the DAO.

MoonDAO has acquired a second Blue Origin seat for the trip, which will take place this fall, and will choose one of its participants at random for the second trip. DAO members minted free NFT "Ticket to Space" to be eligible to participate. Moncada-Larrotis says that the DAO has already chosen the person who will go to space next time, and that he/she has agreed to complete the mission. The DAO chose a person, as well as several alternatives, using the built-in randomizer from Chainlink to ensure authenticity.

Launching the MOONEY token and sending members into space are the first and second phases of the DAO mission. The third stage is to raise money for further space exploration and research, and the fourth stage is to create your own lunar colony. Regardless of whether the DAO can achieve its future ambitions or not, its achievements are remarkable in themselves. It is estimated that in total only about 600 people have been in space.
