The Slope wallet may be linked to an exploit on the Solana network that caused losses of $6 million
The developers of the Solana blockchain believe that the Slope closed source wallet may be the cause of an exploit that caused more than 9,000 hot wallets to lose millions of dollars worth of crypto assets
"It seems that this is not a bug in the main Solana code, but a bug in the software that is used by some popular wallets among users," Solana developers said.
To date, assets worth more than $6 million have been stolen from users' hot wallets. Slope developers stated that a number of wallets were compromised, but did not confirm whether their methods of storing private keys were the reason for this.
The developers of the Phantom wallet noted that they have reason to believe that the vulnerabilities found are related to complications when importing accounts into and out of Slope.
Solana Labs CEO Anatoly Yakovenko first suspected that the exploit might be related to the Apple iOS supply chain problem, but then limited the source of the hack to centralized Slope servers, where private keys could be stored in plain text.
Other developers are increasingly claiming that Slope stored private keys in plaintext on a centralized server that was compromised by a hacker.
Several Twitter users tried to gather information about the victims of the exploit, although no compensation plan was presented. The 9,000 affected wallets represent only a small fraction of the 25 million existing Solana hot wallets.
