According to scientists, Web3 will help solve the problems of mental health support

According to professors from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, decentralized mental health services may be the answer to the impending shortage of mental health professionals.
Johannes Trul of the Johns Hopkins School of Mental Health suggested that the mental health support sector could take an example from decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) by offering support services in a decentralized system.

Trul wrote a scientific article on "Web3 and digital mental health" on July 22, suggesting a decentralized peer support system that relies on "people with life experience" to provide assistance "based on their experience in managing their own conditions."

Trul said the system will work using a "community-linked crypto token" that will reward those who "make a positive contribution to the community," such as helping someone overcome a mental health problem in a peer support environment. In a tweet introducing the article, the scientist wrote that he "had fun" working on it.

"At a time when I was worried and thinking about the state of the world, it was fun to work on this really positive and inspiring article about the potential of web3 and online support for mental health," wrote Johannes Trul.

He said the system would not be bound by "border restrictions," noting how quickly governments adapted to remote medical services during the COVID-19 pandemic, although he acknowledged that it alone could not replace the basic medical system. It can only be used as a supplement to the traditional psychologist.

Another professor who participated in writing a scientific article,Luke Kalb, said that a decentralized peer support system would provide greater flexibility and freedom in how we approach mental health issues, stating:

"[The community] can come up with their own creative ways to solve problems [...] this peer support system opens up so many opportunities for creativity."

The professors noted that such a system may become necessary in the future, given the likelihood of a shortage of traditional mental health services in the future, when "61% of practicing psychiatrists in the United States are approaching retirement."

The document also cites a study by the Ministry of Health and Human Services, which predicts "a protracted shortage of national staff among all mental health professionals by 2025."

Although the professors have just started the first stages of research, they hope to start building the necessary professional relationships to make this happen. Trul said that "it is difficult to find the right technical partnership with the same shared vision [...], however, we want to publish this as a call for study, unification and mutual assistance."
