SonicWall: "The frequency of ransomware attacks decreased with the fall of the BTC price"

According to a report by the American cybersecurity company SonicWall, in the first half of 2022, the number of ransomware attacks worldwide decreased.
In a report on cyber threats, researchers from SonicWall recorded 236.1 million attempts of ransomware in the first half of 2022, which is 23% less than last year.

A ransomware program is a type of security attack in which a hacker gains unauthorized access to a computer network and encrypts all data, blocking access to them. Hackers then demand payment, usually in the form of a cryptocurrency such as bitcoin.

The researchers say that, among other factors, the drop in cryptocurrency prices has pushed cybercriminals away from ransomware. In the period from January to June 2022, the price of bitcoin fell from $48,000 to $20,000 amid weakening global macroeconomic trends and rising inflation.

A SonicWall representative said that bitcoin prices serve as an early indicator of the frequency of ransomware attacks, although there is no direct relationship between them. In addition to the decline in crypto markets, SonicWall researchers linked other factors to a decrease in the number of events related to ransomware, including security standards in companies and increased law enforcement efforts.

"There are too many variables in the first half of 2022 to make a direct correlation. However, over the years, the ebb and flow of a popular cryptocurrency such as bitcoin has often served as an early indicator of changes in the overall volume of ransomware," the representative said.

According to SonicWall researchers, the peak of ransomware incidents occurred in 2021 with a record number of events. During the year, there were several high-profile attacks aimed at organizations such as JBS Foods and Colonial Pipeline, both of which paid hackers millions of dollars worth of bitcoins.

As ransomware attacks began to make headlines, it prompted the government to take measures to control the problem. For example, in February 2022, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation launched a virtual asset exploitation group to track ransomware programs and profits derived from such attacks.

Ransomware is only part of the overall cybersecurity story. While the volume of ransomware around the world has decreased, overall malware incidents have increased. SonicWall researchers reported 2.8 billion malware attacks in the first half of 2022, which is 11% more than last year.
