Square Enix Launches Final Fantasy VII NFT Collection with Enjin
Square Enix, a video game company, is launching a non-interchangeable tokens (NFT) project associated with its Final Fantasy franchise.
With the help of Enjin (ENJ), an NFT infrastructure company, Square Enix plans to release a collection of cards and figures dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII on the Enjin Efinity (EFI) blockchain. Consumers will be able to purchase a commemorative figurine that comes with a code to redeem the NFT figurine version. Pre-orders for action figures are available today, and pre-orders for collectible cards will be available later this year.
It's unclear how the project will affect fans of the franchise, given that other decisions to include NFT in games have been met with serious backlash. GSC Game World, the Ukrainian game development company behind the S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise, canceled its plans to include NFT in its S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 game when fans of the game strongly opposed such a decision.
President of Square EnixYosuke Matsuda previously stated that in 2022 the firm will allocate more funds for blockchain technology. In a letter dated January 1, he said that the firm was considering issuing its own tokens, but softened these comments, saying that he sees examples of overheated trading in the NFT sector.
