Miners must disclose energy data, US lawmakers say

A number of US lawmakers have called on the country's energy and environmental authorities to oblige cryptocurrency miners to disclose data on energy use, as it was discovered that the seven largest mining companies consume as much energy as all houses in Houston.
In a letter published on Friday, the US senatorElizabeth Warren and five other lawmakers wrote that the results of their investigation, which collected data from seven miners, including Riot, Bitdeer, Stronghold and Marathon, are "alarming."

According to the data provided in the investigation, seven companies use more than 1,045 megawatts of capacity for cryptocurrency mining.

The data showed that "cryptominers are large consumers of energy, accounting for a significant - and rapidly growing - amount of carbon emissions," the lawmakers wrote.

In May, the industry lobbying network Bitcoin Mining Council (BMC) said that crypto mining centers are "no different" from facilities hosted or managed by Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft.

In the first three months of this year, about 58.4% of the sustainable energy balance was used in the bitcoin mining industry, BMC notes with reference to a survey conducted by it.

In June, the New York State Senate passed a law on a moratorium on cryptocurrency mining, which blocks new permits and extensions for mining facilities with proof of work using carbon energy sources.
