Ryder Ripps hired the WilmerHale law firm to represent him in a dispute with Yuga Labs. He said on Twitter that he had endured "a lot of suffering" but would consider a settlement in excess of $100 billion.
Conceptual artistRyder Ripps instructed lawyers before the upcoming litigation with Yuga Labs and said at a session on Twitter Spaces that he would settle the case only with the payment of more than $ 100 billion.
Yuga Labs, the creators of the Bored Ape Yaht Club collection, filed a lawsuit against the Californian artist on June 25Ryder Ripps and the founder of the trading platform NFT Not Larva LabsJeremy Kaena to the U.S. District Court in Central California.
They claim that Ripps is trying to "devalue NFT Bored Ape by flooding the NFT market with his own collection of NFT imitators, using the original images of Bored Ape Yaht Club and naming his NFT series "RR/BAYC". The company is seeking a court order that will prevent Ripps from further interfering in its alleged economic relations, as well as provide damages and payment for lawyers.
Speaking early Wednesday morning, Ripps said he had experienced "a lot of suffering" but that he would consider settling the legal dispute if Yuga Labs offered a large sum.
"I see the possibility that one day they will wake up and realize the seriousness of their trolling, their incessant lies and their disrespect for other people... and realize that they have screwed up badly and intend to do the right thing," Ripps said. They should say, "We're going to give this money back to all these people, and we're going to pay Ryder's lawyer, and we're going to see what we can do to fix this, we're going to become a charity." But the way it's happening now, I don't see them doing it."
Louis Tompros of the WilmerHale law firm will represent Ripps and Kahen as lead counsel. Tompros previously represented the creator of "Pepe the Frog"Matt Fury in an attempt to reclaim the character from alternative right- wing figures and groups and won the case againstAlex Jones from Infowars for his use of the character in 2019.
He will work together with a co-legal adviserBy Alfred Steiner of Meister & Steiner PLLC, an expert on NFT and intellectual property law.
Late last year, Ripps began drawing parallels between the BAYC collection and what he called the "subversive culture of Nazi trolls on the Internet." In mid-May, he released his RR/BAYC collection, which copies the design of the original NFT BAYC. His claims that the use of certain images and numbers in the BAYC collection is a subtle hint of Nazism were repeated in an hour-long "documentary" by YouTuber Filion, who also called on BAYC owners to destroy their NFTs.
Although Yuga had remained silent about the theories up to this point, after the release of the video they could not stand it. Yuga Labs called these statements "nonsense."
Ripps views the court case as an attack on art and freedom of speech. For him, the RR/BAYC collection is the art of protest. For Yuga Labs, this is copyright infringement and part of an unjustified attack on the brand.
