Chainalysis Launches Hotline for Companies Exposed to Cryptocurrency Cyberattacks

The analytical company Chainalysis has launched a hotline "Responding to crypto incidents", which will receive messages about cases when hackers demand payments in cryptocurrency from platforms or companies.
"Today we are launching Crypto Incident Response, a rapid response service for organizations that have become victims of a cyber attack or unauthorized intrusion into the network related to theft or ransom demand in cryptocurrency," Chainalysis reported.

In this way, the firm is trying to "help bring attackers to justice and demonstrate that cryptocurrency is not an asset class of anonymous crime."

In a blog post published on Wednesday, Chainalysis said that its hotline "Responding to crypto Incidents" will work around the clock and seven days a week for victims of "hacker attacks, attacks using ransomware, code exploits or attacks using flash loans", during which "cryptocurrency funds or requested, or stolen." The company explained the launch of a service informing about ransomware attacks related to cryptocurrency by the fact that such attacks pose "problems for national security", as well as potentially undermining confidence in the crypto industry.

According to Chainalysis, hackers are responsible for the loss of more than $3 billion worth of cryptocurrencies as a result of thefts and ransom demands as a result of 251 attacks in 2021, with transactions with illegal addresses accounting for 0.15% of the total transactions in the sector. The firm said that after receiving the report, the team will work with the victim to trace the funds, if necessary, and possibly coordinate their actions with local authorities.

"Attacks are becoming more frequent and serious, which represents a serious obstacle to building trust in cryptocurrency," Chainalysis said. We are investing in this service not only to help organizations in difficult times, but also to bring attackers to justice and demonstrate that cryptocurrency is not an asset class of anonymous crime."

Previously, Chainalysis collaborated with the US authorities to combat high-profile ransomware attacks and cyber attacks that threaten the country's infrastructure. In 2021, the analytical firm said it had studied addresses associated with the Russian Suex business as part of an investigation into the alleged provision of hackers with access to cryptocurrency sent as payment for ransomware attacks. The Justice Department also worked with Chainalysis to help seize funds from the ransomware operator who allegedly attacked hospitals during the pandemic.
