In June, the head of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, presented several prototypes of headsets that are designed to help develop Metaverse. At the moment, Quest 2 from Meta dominates the VR headset market, followed by Pico from ByteDance. Despite the fact that the virtual reality market is only at the beginning of its development, billions of dollars are already being invested in it.
What% of the VR headset market is already under Meta's control
Meta already accounts for at least 90% of the VR headset market with Quest 2. Meta is followed by Pico from ByteDance, operating in China. According to the report, Pico occupies 4.5% of the VR headset market. Thus, Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is actually a monopolist in the market. According to IDC data, headset shipments increased by 241% in the first quarter of this year, compared with the first quarter of 2021.
Meta has invested $10 billion in the development of virtual reality, develops and offers technologies that allow people to feel that they are in the same room with other virtual participants. This was stated by Mark Zuckerberg in the presentation.
How will the VR headset market develop further
Now virtual reality headsets are still very expensive, inconvenient, and their quality does not meet the requirements. Therefore, the market needs more advanced devices. According to preliminary data, the supply of VR headsets will grow by 26% in 2022. It is unknown whether Meta will be able to maintain its dominant position in this industry over the next two years.
Apple will be a competitor for it. Apple is expected to introduce its own headset in 2023. If its device turns out to be more technologically advanced than Quest 2, then the Meta monopoly will cease to exist.
However, this does not mean that Zuckerberg is going to give up and give the market to Apple. This situation is beneficial for users, since corporations will try to offer them more and more advanced VR headsets.
At the same time, it is worth noting that there are no Metaverses as such yet. There are protometaverses that have a limited set of functions and capabilities.
