The team behind the Harmony blockchain network has announced that Horizon, its cross-chain bridge to Ethereum, has been stolen for almost $100 million in ETH.
The theft occurred Thursday morning, according to a tweet posted by the Harmony team. The address listed in the thread contains 85,837,251 ETH worth about $98 million at the time of publication.

"We have started working with national authorities and forensic experts to identify the culprit and recover the stolen funds," the Harmony team said in a statement.

"We have also notified the exchanges and stopped the Horizon Bridge to prevent further transactions. The team is making every effort, the investigation continues. We will keep everyone informed as we investigate further and receive additional information," the Harmony developers added.

The Harmony developers also stated that their bitcoin bridge was not affected, stating that the relevant assets "located in decentralized repositories are currently safe."

Cross-chain bridges have been attacked more than once. Earlier this year, the bridge connecting the Axie Infinity Ronin sidechain to the Ethereum network suffered from an exploit, which led to the loss of more than $ 600 million in cryptocurrency. The Horizon Bridge is another affected connection between a separate blockchain and Ethereum.
