Vitalik Buterin sarcastically praised EOS, once a popular blockchain project, saying that its abbreviation stands for "Ethereum on steroids." He added that his core project team managed to learn lessons from "naivety to Ethereum" and eventually created an excellent scalable blockchain project.
- V, are you okay?, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson said in response to Buterin's cryptic comment.
Some assumed that Buterin's account had been hacked. Others took the tweet at face value, expressing bewilderment at the fact that a Canadian programmer is shilling a failed "Ethereum killer."
In fact, Buterin just referred to a running joke in the community about EOS, and only some of the programmer's followers seemed to be able to understand it.
EOS, which was once the most publicized blockchain in the world due to its record initial coin offering of $4 billion, has gone into obscurity over the past few years.
After a successful start, the Block.one project failed to gain momentum, faced with a massive outflow of developers. The blockchain user base has shrunk since 2018, making it virtually irrelevant.
The proprietary EOS token is currently in 48th place by market capitalization, despite the fact that in 2018 it was one of the largest cryptocurrencies.
Buterin himself has been very critical of EOS in the past, so his praise is seen by cryptocurrency enthusiasts as a serious red flag.
Back in 2019, he described the "Ethereum killer" as a "centralized pile of garbage", targeting its ambiguous governance structure on the network.
