NYSDEC rejected Greenidge Generation's application to extend work permit

The New York State Department of Environmental Protection (NYSDEC) has rejected Greenidge Generation's application for an extension of the permit required to continue operating in New York.
Regulators said Greenidge's work is incompatible with the climate goals set out in the state's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New York by at least 85% by 2050.

The decision was made on the same day when The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), having decided that the Clean Air Act - the most influential air pollution control law in the country - does not give the federal agency the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. The decision limits federal power to achieve climate goals, leaving them in the hands of individual state agencies.

Greenidge is being targeted by environmentalists for using fossil fuels to conduct mining on Seneca Lake in upstate New York. In its rejection letter to Greenidge, NYSDEC referred to a "dramatic" increase in greenhouse gas emissions from the Dresden facility since the Climate Law came into force. The station is powered by natural gas, although it was originally coal-fired before Greenidge's parent company, Atlas Holdings, converted it.

New York Governor Katie Hole took to social media to celebrate the decision, tweeting:

"I welcome the NYSEC decision that will stop future increases in greenhouse gas emissions at Seneca Lake."

Howl has not yet signed a bill passed by the New York State Legislature that would impose a two-year moratorium on certain types of cryptomining operations. Instead, supporters of cryptomining hope that Howl will decide to sign another bill sponsored by a member of the Democratic Party, Clyde Vanel, which will create a task force to study the impact of the cryptocurrency industry on the environment in New York.

Trade unions, including the International Community of Electrical Workers, whose members work at the Greenidge plant in Dresden, opposed both the proposed moratorium on mining and the NYSDEC decision on Thursday.
