The head of the megascam OneCoin Rouge Ignatova got into the top 10 most wanted by the FBI
Ruzha Ignatova was added to the list of the FBI's ten most wanted criminals on Thursday morning. The OneCoin founder was last seen in Athens at the end of 2017.
The FBI is going to announce that it will add the founder of OneCoinRuzhu Ignatov added to his list of the ten most wanted fugitives at a press conference on Thursday at 11:00.
According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Ignatova "allegedly defrauded investors of more than $4 billion through the cryptocurrency company OneCoin."
OneCoin's business was built on selling educational packages for cryptocurrency trading to its members, who were rewarded with commissions for selling to even more new members. The scheme claimed that at its peak, its membership reached 3 million people, or, more precisely, the victims of its fraud around the world.
However, blockchain technology was not behind OneCoin, and users could not exchange their coins for fiat or transfer them to other cryptocurrencies. Instead, those who made money from this scheme did so by attracting new investors.
Ignatova, who has Bulgarian and German citizenship, disappeared at the end of 2017. She was last seen in Athens, Greece, in the company of two Russian-speaking men. Despite attempts to find her, including through the popular BBC podcast series "The Missing Crypto Queen," her whereabouts are currently unknown.
However, other key figures in the OneCoin leadership have been successfully detained. In 2019, the Southern District of New York accused Ignatova and other OneCoin participants of fraud. Among the accomplices was her younger brotherKonstantin Ignatov, who, despite the plea deal, is currently awaiting a sentence of up to 90 years in prison.
In May, Ignatova was included in the list of the most wanted by Europol.
