Tencent has launched an augmented reality (XR) division, local media reported, citing Steven Ma, senior vice president of the gaming division of the Chinese technology giant Interactive Entertainment Group (IEG).
According to Ma, Tencent will develop "reference" products for virtual reality (VR) over the next four to five years, including testing software, game content, operating systems, software development kits and hardware.
According to anonymous sources quoted by Reuters, the unit is expected to be expanded to 300 employees.
The Tencent XR division will be headed by game developer IEG NExT Studios, which is known for its non-commercial games such as "Nishan Shaman" and "Death Coming," the Chinese gaming publication Jinghe reported in May.
Chinese tech giants, including Alibaba, ByteDance, Baidu and NetEase, are also looking to conquer the metaverse through related endeavors such as virtual reality, augmented reality or launching their own metaverse platforms.
