"I talked about my desire to promote institutional change in parts of the world like Iraq where there's a free press and free religion," Bush said at the news conference, "and I told him that a lot of people in our country would hope that Russia would do the same thing."

Putin, in a barbed reply, said: "We certainly would not want to have the same kind of democracy as they have in Iraq, I will tell you quite honestly."

talk about setting yourself up to be the butt of a joke...i have to say i was both amused and disgusted at the same time. amused at puttin's sharp but appropriate comeback to a moronic comment by a, well, moron. disgusted that this country is so inaptly represented by this barely trained monkey. no wonder the majority of the world think americans are idiots. look who the masses choose to put in the top executive office of the land, twice in a fucking row!!! really, we are going to hold up iraq as a shining example of institutional change? yes, there maybe free press and free religion if you don't mind having your country invaded by foreign troops; your house bombed and your entire household executed if people don't like what you have to say. who in their fucking right mind would go for that kind of institutional change? i think the enjoyment of theoretical freedoms is one of those higher tiers in the hierarchy of needs. no one gives a shit about freedom of press and freedom of religion when you are constantly in fear for survival and wondering when you are going to go up in a puff of red mist and body parts.
