So, I'm reading The Sword of Shannara, because Steve likes it, and I'd read one of the other books from the series while I was bored at his place one weekend, and I figured, what the heck?
Well, I've just got to the part where Frodo and Sam Shea and Flick are recovering from their wounds in Rivendell Storlock, and Gandalf Allanon has told them his plans to take them through the Mines of Moria the Tomb of the Kings. Also, memo to Terry Brooks: show, don't tell. Please. "They had a heated conversation, but I'm not going to tell you any of it, only what they decided, because dialog might develop the characters in a way that doesn't involve endless exposition." *sigh*
I suspect I came into the series too late - I'm sure that if I'd read it in high school before my LotR binge, I'd have been perfectly entertained. It's not *bad*, after all. It's only that I'm 200 pages into a 700 page book, and I can only really read it on the bus because I keep getting distracted by shiny things anywhere else. :(
