I'm almost finished with all my Ginny Weasley stuff! I got my robe in the mail yesterday, and I like it. Plus, Devan, the girl that runs
cloaksforandrew is a total sweetheart and overnighted it to make sure it'd get to me on time. So, definitely reccomending them. My sweater and tie came this morning, and I'm really pleased with them, too. I learned to tie a half-windsor
here, and they look great together. I bought a white oxford at a thrift store yesterday 'cause none of mine looked right. I found a pair of grey knee-highs I totally forgot I owned that look good in a dresser drawer, I bought the shoes forever ago at payless, and I bought the ultra-detailed 5 inch Gryffindor patch from
Patch Palace, and its pretty spiffy.
To make my wand, I ended up buying a .5 inch dowel and some random wooden thingies, hot gluing one of the wooden things on to a sawed-off portion of dowel, sanding it into the right shape and staining. Actually, the first coat of stain is drying as I type = D It's by no means perfect or accurate, but, I paid $10 for enough supplies to make three wands, and it wasn't hard at all, so I'm happy. Actually, it was a really fun project. I made one for
chinab, and I might make up a third one and sell it on ebay or something.
My skirt is 75% done, I still need to attatch the yoke and hem it, but that's not a big deal.
chinab was wonderful enough to crochet me a cool scarf and beanie--I knew I wouldn't be able to get a really close match of the red yarn, so, I opted for the style in the pics instead of a movie-accurate one. Besides, it looks like Ginny's mom made it, as opposed to one from the school outfitters, which I think is a nice little Weasley touch. The grey and the yellow are dead-on matches for my sweater, though, so thats nice.
Here are my random wooden thingies--I had a pack of Sculpey in my hand as I went to get a dowel, and just happened to see these. There were a ton of different shapes and sizes of things, I just thought these would make nice wand handles, y'know? There are pros and cons to both--on the plus side, I would have been able to get a better shape from the sculpey, and attach it better, but the Sculpey takes a lot of, y'know, work, and this was just easier ; ) Besides, I wanted to actually stain it as opposed to painting it, and I didn't think the Sculpey would take the stain.
Here's the stain I used on my wand. This stuff has some advantages--it's stain and finish in one, so two coats and you're done. It's pretty easy to apply and dries in two hours, and it's easier than using the stuff in a can, 'cause you can control the pouring better, and this is enough to do every wand in Olivander's, I'm sure.
Here's my wand, partly sanded, just to give you a better idea of the shape you get using this method.
Here's my hat and scarf--even though the red's too bright, it's not quite that bright in real life. Besides, I may wear this costume once or twice yearly, but these things are comfy, damnit = D I'll wear them all the time....either that one, or my Jayne hat, anyway. I'm such a nerd = D I think
chinab is going to start selling these, so if anybody is interested, comment or email me.
Here's a progress pic of my skirt, I just need to attach the yoke and hem it. Yay!
Here's almost all my stuff together--sweater, tie, hat, scarf, socks, robe, and patch. I just realized, it looks like I sewed the patch on the sweater. I didn't, I just put it there for the pic. I need to attach it to my robe. And get a dress form.
Here's a slightly closer view of my sweater, tie, robe, patch and socks.
Can't wait for tomorrow night!
