You know you've been sewing too long and should probably call it quits for the evening when you find yourself cutting out interfacing and thinking "hmm...I wonder if I can iron this to remove the wrinkles and make pinning and cutting easier ( Read more... )

I'm not one for dressing up for movies, so probably just wearing a SW tshirt! :-)

If *I* put that much effort, time and money into my stuff, I'd wear them every chance I got. But hey, to each their own. My friends and I are going to a party sort of thing at a local AMC 30--you doing anything special?

I really like making costumes more than I like wearing them! :-)

We're going to the midnight showing at the Senator theatre in Baltimore. :-)

I think it's the theatrical part of me coming out. I'm perfectly okay using someone else's research and methods (hence why your site is like my Mecca) so long as I can get in character and strut and show off in the finished product.

jenthompson has stated more than once that research and design is her thing, not sewing, and that's perfectly logical to me, 'cause she's an arteest. I have never been able to just look at historical clothing with an eye for line and color and scale and all that jazz--I just like it, or I don't. I don't have her gift, or her trained eye.

You seem very analytical. You have a degree in astrophysics for pete's sake, so I guess that makes you a math/science person. Which is perfect for what you do, because that attention to detail pays off when studying photographs and screencaps for the tiny, minute details that make your costumes amazing.

This is actually something I was discussing with another seamstress a few days ago--the ways in which we all fill different niches in our shared obsession.

Hey Lauren! Long time no post! What are you wearing to the opening? Classic Jedi robes? I think I will have just enough time to squeech out my corset outfit (it hit a road block when I decided that even following eldawen's advice about layering the black overlay it still wasn't close enough to the original lace pattern and I chopped up my skirt to resew it- hooray for anal retentiveness). And I agree with you that if I made stuff like Maggie I would wear it every darn day ;) Especially since she whips it out like nobodies business!

hee hee - thanks for the compliments! I don't know about whipping them out though! I spend most every evening on this stuff! I have trouble just sitting still and watching TV and sewing is a great "in front of the TV" hobby! :-)

Honestly - I'm starting to feel the pressure about having kids - not ready for them yet, but want one before 35 (ok, that's still 5 years off). So I feel like I have to finish everything I really want to get done before then. I think that's part of why I'm trying to work fast!

okay, you have no idea who I am, I just was following the interest list for Ngila Dickson, but I just wanted to say that I have, so, been there! Question is, how close were you to plugging in the iron before you realised? :o)

Whenever I marathon sew, I literally pull a marathon. I have food, drink, phone, car keys (in case I need to run out and get something last minute from the fabric store....y'know....elastic, hooks and eyes, a totally different pattern, ect.) and other necessities in my sewing room with me, and I have my iron/ironing board set up, hot, and ready to go the moment I need to press a seam or something. I had the stuff on the frickin board and adjusting the steam before I realized what I was about to do.
