whee! productivity!

In all the excitement of me getting my jedi robe and making my costume , and Ashton getting her expensive-ass lightsaber and making her horns, we just completely for got about Brittany. Don’t ask me how, but we just totally did.

She wants to go to the Star Wars party with us, and she wants to go in costume. Problem? She doesn’t want to spend much money on it, much time, she can’t sew she wants it to look cool, and she wants it to be something she’ll forseeably wear again. No, not a challenge at all < /sarcasm>.

So, your friendly neighborhood Sith Seamstress has come up with a damn good solution that satisfies all of those needs, and will be easy to make, as well. Brittany is going to be a twi’lek belly dancer. Now, before any eyebrows are arched, let me explain a wee bit. Brittany is cool with the fact that this is going to be a persona, as opposed to a total movie reproduction. It's what I'm doing, it's what Kari's doing, and it gives one a hell of a lot more "wiggle room". So, persona it is. The basic outline of her character is this; she's a member of an extremely rare, extremely beautiful, extremely expensive sub-species of twi'lek. They are metallic gold, and very graceful. Brittany will be owned by Jabba, and be a dancer in his palace. Simple enough, right?

Now, the fun part--the costume. Brittany's wanted good belly dancer garb for this faire season for a while, anyway, so she will, in fact, wear it again. I'm making Simplicity 5359, view C. Basic harem pants and cute top. I was going to just make the pants and the Fat Chance Belly Dance choli pattern, but, it really wouldn't work with the fabric. More on that later. Anyway, speaking of fabric, I found a gorgeous burgundy/black changeable silk/? blend on ebay. It's a 90/10 blend, so it's still really pretty and silky, but it's more durable. I got four yards for ten bucks plus shipping from the seller Londonsilks. Fast shipping, friendly people. Anyway, I also bought trim on ebay, 2+(I bought it as two, but the guy cut generously) yards of really cool coin trim. now that I've seen it, I'm positive that I can reproduce it myself. It's just plain fabric store trim with glass seed beads and those little coins you can buy by the gross fairly cheap. Here's a couple of pictures, behind the

Anyway, I cut out the pattern pieces, and the pants earlier. I'm going to deviate from the pattern slightly and make an elastic waistband as opposed to a gathered one, mainly for comfort and insurance against weight loss/gain. Oh, and it's way easier. The top was going to be the FCBD choli, but, it's a really light fabric, and said choli is unlined, so, I'm going for the Simplicity top instead. Just as cute, lined, and she can wear a bra under it if so inclined. Closer to May, I'll cover a headband with scrap fabric and maybe even scrap trim, spray paint and stuff little girl's tights and sew them into the headband, and make strap-thingies to wrap around the lekku out of more scrap fabric. Oh, and she'll be using painted citrus juicers as ears. She's got a couple of scarves and things to accessorize with, so it should end up looking pretty cool. What do y'all think?
