i've been so proud of being the only person at work who hasn't cut myself. ten years at discovery and i have never cut myself, despite all the crazy shit we do with box knives cutting out stickers and standees and everything else.
i STILL have never cut myself at work, thank you very much. =P at home, in the kitchen, while trying to dice up a pork shoulder this morning... yeah, that's another matter. =PPP
i had, of course, just sharpened the kitchen knives. and the pork shoulder skin was drying and quite leathery. knife slipped. cut a thin line (like a papercut) over my left index finger and then landed solidly on the left middle finger, where it cut right across and through my fingernail. nail bed injuries? are like scalp injuries. they bleed like a mother fucker. and there i am at 6am in the morning, swearing at myself as i hastily run my hand under water, grab a couple papertowels to keep from dripping, hightale it downstairs to the bathroom medicine cabinet where the antibacterial spray and the band aids are, and then proceed to drip blood everywhere in the bathroom sink while wrapping three regular band aids around and over the fingertip.
then i met up with boss for the carpool and went into work. =P made him drive so i could hold my hand up above heart level the entire way. then rebandaged it at work with the much better stocked work first aid kit. end result is that it looks ugly but is mostly superficial - i'll probably loose part of the nail, but oh well. i can even type, though it's a little awkward with the bulky fingertip bandaid hitting keys around the key i mean to hit.
just, ARGH. given my profession i'm sure i was due some sort of trauma - i actually haven't done a good cut like that since i slipped with an x-acto knife back when i was at the art institute, took off all the skin on the left index fingertip and down enough levels to (again) make it bleed all over the place. in a profession where knife useage is a daily thing, i suppose that's not too bad of a track record, i suffer a lot more from paper cuts than actual cuts. =P
