speaking of basketball.

Here's what happened yesterday.

WHEREAS, the Dallas Mavericks won their first ever National Basketball Association championship, emerging victorious with a 105-95 victory in Game 6; and

WHEREAS, the Dallas Mavericks displayed the loyalty, integrity and teamwork essential to victory before the entire country, affirming that these admirable traits are as crucial as talent and athleticism; and

WHEREAS, NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Dirk Nowitzki chose to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks in the summer of 2010, forgoing free agency and keeping his talents in Dallas, thus remaining loyal to the team, city and fans for whom he played his entire career; and

WHEREAS, the proud city of Cleveland and the entire state of Ohio share in the excitement of Dallas Mavericks fans everywhere.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, John R. Kasich, Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby name the
DALLAS MAVERICKS
organization, friends, family and fans as honorary Ohioans, with all privileges and honors therein, for the day of June 14, 2011.

On this 13th day of June, 2011;
[signed]       [seal]
John R. Kasich
Governor

Now.

I don't, as I said, actually follow or care that much about basketball. And I'm certainly no fan of John Kasich[1]. And I'm pretty sure proclaiming that the enemy of my enemy on the basketball court is my friend isn't the best use of the governor's time - though I'm also sure this was written by a staffer (one who doesn't believe in the Oxford comma, but what are you going to do) and the amount of the governor's time wasted on it was probably about fifteen seconds. Of greater concern is whether Folks In General will take it as it's meant and go "right on" or whether they'll go "JFC, Cleveland, move on already"; but maybe when you know you're a laughingstock the only thing to do is go ahead and embrace it? I don't know; the city of Cleveland doesn't have a whole lot of sense of humor, some days.

Nevertheless, this pleased me in a particular way. :-) Got me right where I used to live, heh. (Of course - what are the privileges of being an honorary Ohioan? If I were a Mavs fan, I'm not sure I'd want it. But see above re: taking it as it's meant, I guess.)

[1] A friend of the friend who originally posted this on Facebook is, though. "Ohio Gov. John Kasich is a great leader, hopefully on the short list for 2012 VP, and was a great friend of our former congressman ..." I had to physically restrain myself from replying that Joe Biden is going to be the 2012 VP. Time and a place, Fox. :-)
