Sometimes, Moonbyul likes to stand out in the sun and bask in the sunlight. As a child, she was a rebellious one and she never really listened to her parents. So when her parents told her not to look at the sun, she did it anyway. She was left blinded for a full minute and she cried for an hour because of that. Nevertheless, she didn’t think looking at the sun would actually blind her permanently. At a tender age of seven, she thought the sun was amazing, shining on its own.
When Moonbyul was ten, she learned in science class that the moon didn’t actually shine on its own. She learned that the moon merely reflected light from the sun. She was hugely disappointed in the moon. There was an indescribable urge to learn why the moon couldn’t shine on its own and she pestered her teacher because of that. Her teacher only waved it off, saying she was too young and that she would know it later on.
Moonbyul was thirteen when she met Solar. She really liked Solar a lot because Solar’s name meant the sun and she really liked the sun. Also, Solar was really nice and always shared the kimchi and pickled radish Solar’s mother always prepared. Solar was her best friend and Moonbyul liked to spend time with her. Even doing sucky school work was fun because Solar would end up singing a song and Solar’s voice was really pretty. She also liked Solar’s hair.
With a height of 1.62 metres, Moonbyul was really of average height when she reached seventeen years old. She was taller than Solar, who was actually a year older than her, and she took pride in being taller than her unnie. She was sought after by a lot of guys but she rejected them all because her parents had specifically told her not to date till she was a bit older. By then, Moonbyul was a little less rebellious and knew her parents meant well. But even so, her parents were not the only reason she rejected boys. She didn’t realize why till she was twenty.
Moonbyul was dating a boy named Minhyuk when she was twenty. He was a very nice guy - treated her well, took her out on dates, bought her presents. He was good-looking too. He was pretty much what every girl wanted in a guy. But they didn’t last. In just six months, they broke up - because Moonbyul wanted to. The poor boy was very much in love with Moonbyul and Moonbyul felt guilty for not being able to reciprocate. That was partially why she chose to leave him. The actual main reason, she didn’t tell anyone, especially not her best friend Solar. She always had an inkling of it but she never really thought about it until she reached twenty. She swallowed the secret and buried it deep within her heart.
Her friends threw a party for her when Moonbyul was twenty one. That was the first time she wore a bodycon dress that clung to her skin and exposed her slim, hourglass figure. It was also the first time she consumed alcohol. Alcohol. Vile liquid. That was why she did something so unforgivable. Something so unforgivable, Solar ran away from her and fled into the night, just like Cinderella. But Moonbyul was no prince - or princess, for the matter. It was all the alcohol’s fault. Or maybe it was how Solar was blindingly beautiful. She didn’t - couldn’t - think at all. She didn’t realize it at all until she was pushed away and suddenly her lipstick was smudged and her left cheek hurt. Moonbyul had to drink hangover soup the next morning and it tasted saltier than usual. Maybe it was because of the tears that wouldn’t stop.
She didn’t meet Solar again till she was twenty three. Solar had asked her out to a café which was situated in a quiet neighbourhood. She got there first, ordering mocha for both Solar and herself because they had similar tastes. Solar was five minutes late when she entered the café. It was an awkward conversation, filled with suffocating silences and frazzled formalities. By the end of the conversation, Moonbyul was left with trailing tears and a hurtful heart. It was the kind of pain that was raw, like a wound cut open and left to bleed. Moonbyul didn’t think she would ever heal.
She was twenty four when she was sent overseas due to a compulsory job assignment. She completed it with ease and spent the rest of her stay in her hotel. She thought about how people around her used to claim “if a relationship is successful, it’s love. If it isn’t, it’s youth.” She hated that statement so much. What she had felt was real. It was love and she knew it very well. A year passed and a different kind of pain had settled n her. It was a nagging ache that constantly throbbed. It was something she could withstand but she would always be reminded of its existence. In her hotel room, staring at the night sky, she suddenly thought of suns that blind her and moons that don’t shine on their own. Her middle school teacher had been right - Moonbyul finally understood why the moon couldn’t shine on its own.
At the age of twenty five, Moonbyul is single and still not looking for a relationship. She gets pestered by her parents all the time. When are you going to get a boyfriend? A huff and a sigh. Not now, Mom, too busy with work. Moonbyul’s life comprises of work, work and more work. Occasionally, she takes the day off to just stand out in the sun. She never lets herself look at the sun again, in fear of blinding herself permanently.
She just basks in the sunlight and reminds herself of all that she cannot have.
