Look into my eyes...

So, I went to the optician today for an eye test.

The last few times I've been I've been told "your prescription has changed away from your glasses, but not enough to bother with new ones. Next time though..." There's also been a side order of "and when you get into your forties we'll sort you out with reading glasses."

Having noticed recently that my arms were getting shorter when trying to read, I suspected today would be the day.

It turns out that my new prescription is still close enough to the old one for me to get away with keeping the old glasses for at least one more round. If I did get new ones they would be a bit better (my astigmatism has increased a bit but most of the other numbers are similar to before) and the photochromic-ness would be improved (due to age, the current ones don't go quite clear and probably don't go as dark as modern ones). On the other hand, when asked how dark/light they get, I had to admit to having no idea at all - I look through my glasses, not at them - so I have no idea if this would be an improvement.

Not only that, but instead of reading glasses I have been given reading non-glasses. As in, I should just take my glasses off for reading. Anything under arm's length I'll probably be better without, over a metre I'll be better with, and in between could go either way but won't make much difference. Since much of my non-computery reading is done in the bath without glasses anyway, this won't make all that much difference.

Anyway, that's saved a lot of money and hassle, so a good thing. Though I am tempted by the Sue Perkins-ish frames, for looking-over-the-top-of purposes. And the ones that matched my (current) hair colour.
