Minor literary annoyances
I rather like listening to audiobooks, especially when going to sleep (who says you have to stop getting someone to read you a bedtime story when you're an adult?). I'm currently halfway through Pyramids by Terry Pratchett, which I've read on paper several times, and which here is being read by Nigel Planer.
And one thing is driving me nuts. Basically, Nigel Planer can't pronounce the names. Since several of the names are jokes, this is presumably a simple case of missing the point entirely. Oddly he gets King Pteppicymon XXVII right, presumably because his similarly-named son is referred to throughout as Teppic, but then fails to follow the pronunciation convention with the other names. I can live with Djelibeybi being der-jelly-bay-be, which still just about leaves the joke in. But Ptaclusp (the name of three characters, so it gets said a lot) he pronounces Patter-clusp, which just sounds like a Narnian squirrel.
And I'd just about got used to Patter Clusp, when Ptraci turns up. And he pronounces it Per Tratchy, to rhyme with Sir Scratchy.
Am I the only person wanting to scream "It's Tracy you fool!"
