It was pointed out to me recently (by Dave Gorman in his stage show, not actually personally to me) that people selling clocks tend to set the hands so the clock appears to be smiling. Sometimes it'll be ten to two, but more often it's ten past ten. Or, most likely, a couple of minutes either way - 10:08 or 10:12 - so it's not so obvious.
Once you've been told this, you start seeing smiling clocks everywhere...
A few days later I was in Ikea, and saw a couple of clocks on display. "Oh look," I thought "Dave Gorman was right, they are set to roughly ten past ten."
A bit further on was another display, with more clocks.
And then some different clocks - alarm clocks this time. You may think one of them is grumpy, but if you look closer you'll see it's actually upside down.
When I got home, I clicked the TV on. There was an advert for a wristwatch. A happy smiling wristwatch.
