The fact that Steve got into the Naval Academy alone says a whole lot about his intelligence and character--and for those that don't know, he didn't just 'join the Navy'. Look up the entrance requirements for the Academy. This is a highly ranked college/university where you graduate as an officer in either the Navy or Marine Corps. You have to be at the very top of your senior HS class to even consider applying. (my dad and his dad are/were both alum)
The money the US gov spends to train a SEAL is considerable. They don't choose their candidates lightly. Add in Steve's work in Naval Intelligence and you have a guy who has done and seen it all. I can imagine he's most sought after when putting in his reserve hours.
I totally agree he's yanking Danny's chain a lot of the time. The fics that have him not understanding some of Danny's vocab make me cringe. It's a style of use, not a lack of knowledge that makes Steve comment on Danny's word choices.
Emotionally, Steve definitely has dealing issues. Some of which stems from being in the military since he was 17, the rest from what's happened during his life. He's definitely a complex character--way more than the goofy idiot that's portrayed in some fic.
This is pretty much why I could really see Steve as being one of Seal TEAM Six and enjoy any fic that is well written enough and brave enough to handle that topic.
And it's also why I cringe on seeing fic where Steve is beat down on by the Mook of the Day. No, that's not gonna happen. You either take Steve McGarrett by surprise or you have him in circumstances where Steve is unable to utilize his training efficiently. But no, he won't go down easily.
Yes, to the word choices! I can't believe people are missing that. I've never thought that it was because Steve has a limited vocabulary. DANNY likes yanking his chain that way but Steve is NOT a moron. He's questioning Danny's word choices because Danny tends to sound like a walking dictionary, which of course, amuses him to no end. But he DEFINITELY understands those words!
