Author’s Notes: So back almost a decade ago (yeeps!), I did a
prompt table for drabbles. Except I never manage to do drabbles in the 100 word format, but wrote longer one-shots instead. And then I got a really crazy job, where I’m scheduled in meetings for 10 hours a day, and still have to actually… do my job; so I write very little. But I still try to revisit the table to prompt me when I do have a second to write. So, here we are 10 years later, and finally writing something for
luvscharlie’s prompt of “Gratuitous” for Charlie/Tonks. This is what I came up with. Hope you enjoy it even after all these years! (And yes, anyone who wants to add to the prompts, feel free too - you might not get your fic until 2021 or so, but someday…) Thanks to the goat who doesn’t know what a beta is, but still was an effective one for this.
Molly knew it would be impressive, whatever happened as a result of this relationship. She hoped it would have been a remarkable wedding, if maybe at too young of an age; or a grandbaby, wouldn’t that be nice? Instead the fireworks have caused her second born to run off to a foreign land to wrestle dragons.
Once Charlie had started coming home talking about this siren who could change her hair at will, Molly knew something would happen between them. Charlie was not easily impressed. So it was unsurprising when Charlie started introducing her as his ‘girlfriend.’
It was a little more surprising when she started to get the notes home from Minnie telling her of the detentions Charlie was starting to acquire for Gryffindor. When Molly demanded her friend tell her why her son was being assigned so many, she expected to hear about a smuggled pet, too much time on the Quidditch pitch, or adventurous tales in the Forbidden Forest. But Molly did not know what to do with tales of snogging in every corner of the castle - no matter the time of day, or night - that seemed like it would be her younger children, even Bill, but not Charlie. There was never anyone around, other than whichever teacher caught them, it seemed, so the faculty kept the detentions quiet. But still.
He had always been one for throwing himself into his passions. When he was 5, it was the gnomes in the backyard (tending to them, of course, not de-gnoming). By 10 it was magical folklore; every story, anything that anyone she had ever heard of knew. When he entered Hogwarts, it seemed to be a more healthy balance - magical creatures and Quidditch.
But now... well Molly was just afraid for her son, who was graduating today and still staring heatedly at the girl who used to be his...well what would the word be? Girlfriend doesn't really encompass the passion of a first love.
Molly wasn’t told what happened, of course. Minnie had written her last week that Charlie had been very angry, volatile almost, for a few weeks -- the staff had even kept their distance. Then suddenly he accepted an apprenticeship in Romania of all places.
The girl, for her part, seemed upset, somber almost; her hair black, matching her lineages’ locks, and name. She stared at Charlie too, but with sad eyes that brought Molly no comfort. No, there would be no reconciliation there.
Charlie for his part was almost visibly sending off sparks, he was quivering with tension. Some part of her knew that the dragons were his best fit for a career that fit his personality. But she was still his mother, and was not happy about the danger of the dragons or the distance to Romania.
She sighed. Well, what’s done is done. Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw the twins sitting in at the Gryffindor table seeming, well far too quiet for them - best try to figure out what they’re up to.
