Switched At Birth is the story of two teen girls who discover that they were accidentally switched at birth. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing as a child due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a poor neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.
What’s awesome about it? Half the main characters are hard of hearing or completely without hearing - meaning half the show is in ASL. And it works. And it’s awesome. The only bad part? You so can’t watch this while doing other things and not being glued to the TV, because half the story line is only available from reading subtitles (or knowing ASL).
The characters are engaging and powerful. I started watching this out of curiosity, and I was hooked after the first episode.
It’s currently waiting its next season run “soon”, which means you have time to catch up. All of season one is available now on
the show site on ABC Family and
hulu. Give it a try!
And yes, after it drove me crazy and I finally looked it up, one of the sisters is April from the Gilmore Girls...all grown up!
