1. My best trip ever... My first non-North America excursion - Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland. It was 1993, things were still in turmoil and I was fascinated. Although I’m tempted to change that to the trip to Italy this year. *sigh* Italy was such a perfect vacation.
2. My worst trip ever... hmm.... not any of my international travel. Not sure what it would be.
3. Most important thing I ever lost on a trip... Thankfully nothing too important. *knocks on wood* The thing I remember losing was a dress that I left in Riga, Latvia because I forgot to clean out the hanging clothes from the armoire when packing to leave.
4. Most important thing I ever forgot to take on a trip... I forget something every time, but so far I can't remember it being anything irreplaceable. If forced to answer this it would probably be my copy of Episode II when we went to Lake Como this past spring. Because after seeing Naboo in person, I just wanted to rush back to the hotel and remember every detail of what they had changed.
5. Thing I miss most when I'm away... My sense of belonging - of knowing where everything is, who everyone is, and how to act in every situation.
6. Thing I miss least when I'm away... Stress.
7. Favorite travel partner... The goat. We have complementary travel styles. We also tend to get hungry, tired and cranky at approximately the same time - and know how to deal with the other when we’re that way. Rare.
8. Place I hope to travel to someday... Mongolia, Rwanda and Croatia are my top 3.
9. What's your first travel memory? Visiting darth_aunt1 and family in Kansas.
10. Name one place that you traveled to as a kid and returned to as an adult. It stretches the definition of 'kid' but Edmonton.
11. Was it weird? No; I lived in Edmonton when I went back the second time, so it was bound to be different from visiting when I was younger!
12. How do you sleep on airplanes: booze, drugs or au natural? I don't sleep on airplanes. I try wine to relax me, but it never gets me relaxed enough to actually sleep.
13. Name one thing you think every traveler should see before they die. The sea from a foreign coast - any sea. Contemplating life from a foreign coastline (or sea ice) is one of my favorite pastimes.
14. Where have you been that you would not recommend to others? Uhhhh.... can't think of anywhere. I tend to see the silver lining when travelling.
15. Name one non-travel thing you learned on a trip. Euchre. (And look where that's got us - playing until 3am whenever a group of us gets together around here.)
16. Do you play any games when you travel, like counting convertibles or mullets? No, not even when I was younger.
17. What's an awesome idea for a theme park that no one has thought up? ending all theme parks.
18. Name the coolest animal you've seen in the wild and tell why you loved it. I'm going to have to go with a moose...because it's a frickin’ moose.
19. If you could go to Bora Bora with anyone, who would it be? I'd say the goat for the complementary travel styles, but that would take away some of the, *ahem,* fun I could have there. Probably missile_envy because I have a feeling we would sit around a read all day while ordering drinks from the cabana boy. Maybe theorizing about some fanfic we would write someday, if we had enough energy to actually turn on the laptop. Sounds awesome, when shall we go?
20. What's the weirdest thing you've eaten on your travels? I'm sure I have no idea what it was, there have been plenty of those meals. I’d rather not know really. I might be sick years after the fact.
21. Yellowstone or Yosemite? I haven't seen either; I'd like to see both.
22. What country do you think has the best traditional fashion? That I've been to? Senegal.
23. Name one place in the USA you've never been to but want to see. The Grand Canyon, Alaska, Southern coastal islands, Key West, the badlands, Lanai, NOLA, I could go on.
24. Road trips: Love or hate? Depends on destination and company. Road trips to Ann Arbor are pretty fun, because there's football at the end and Primanti Brothers in between, but in general I'm not too fond of being cooped up in car. I’d rather just get there. Trains are one of my favorite forms of travel.
25. Do you or have you ever lived abroad? Technically yes (Canada), but realistically I don't count that because I didn't leave North America. At least it was Western Canada.
26. Do you sleep in when traveling, or get up at the crack of dawn? Depends, a little of both I guess. I’m usually a night owl when I can be (like when on vacation), so I have to sleep later to make up for that. But once I’m up, I’m ready to go (when on travel; when at home I come up with any excuse not to get out of bed).
27. Name three things you hate about being away from home. The lack of belonging, lack of knowledge of place, and in general I’m always tired from lack of sleep when traveling.
28. Name three things you love about travel. new sights, new tastes, new sounds.
