Tell Me Again, Part 2
“Luke?”
With a grateful sigh and a quick mumbled excuse, Luke turned from the dignitary he’d been having an uncomfortable and unfruitful conversation with. He looked around to meet the dark eyes of his sister, Leia Organa, princess of the destroyed planet, Alderaan.
Leia smiled and laid a gentle hand on his arm. Immediately Luke felt some of the tension leave his body and he gave her a rueful lopsided smile in return.
“Luke…what’s wrong?”
Luke shook his head. It would be impossible to explain, even to Leia. Maybe especially to Leia.
“Nothing’s wrong, Leia. I just feel…restless. Useless.”
He looked around at all the beings dressed in their best, at the gleaming silverware and the rich hangings on the walls.
“Useless! Luke, how can you say that?”
“It’s true, Leia. I’m not good at this, all this talk and maneuvering.”
“Yes, you are good at it. You just don’t like it.”
He reached at to brush her cheek with his knuckles.
“I think…I just need to get away for a bit. I’ll take a walk.”
“You’ll miss dinner.”
“Han will eat enough for us both.”
“I’m sure he will.”
Leia’s voice had turned cool as she spoke of the Millennium Falcon’s cocky pilot. Apparently things weren’t going smoothly between them.
“Are you and Han fighting again?”
Leia ground her teeth together and her dark eyes flashed. Then she forced a smile and gave Luke her best Senator look.
“We’re not fighting. We just had a difference of opinion about his character.”
Luke raised his eyebrows and bit his lip to keep from grinning.
“Well, as long as it’s nothing too important.”
Leia stood on her toes and brushed her lips across his cheek.
“Don’t worry, I can handle Han Solo. You take your walk.”
Luke watched her for a moment as she made her way through the crowd, a picture of graciousness. She was well-respected, that was obvious, by both friends and enemies. Had their mother been the same way?
Mon Mothma said Leia resembled their mother, had the same petite build and dark hair and eyes. She hadn’t said anything about who she thought Luke resembled but he assumed since he didn’t look much like Leia then he must look like their father. Vader. The name whispered through his head and his eyes closed briefly.
How unfair it was to have discovered his father alive after all these years only to lose him again. Now his only memories of his father would be of their fighting and…and…his face as he lay dying in Luke’s arms. A wave of loneliness swept over Luke and he stumbled to the doorway, pulling the hood of his light cloak over his head.
He wound his way through the guests who had congregated in the lush gardens that surrounded the building. The night air was alive with the scent of flowers and strange incense and the various odors that came along with the diversity of the guests. He walked swiftly past it all until he reached one of the gates, paused momentarily before slipping unseen past the sentry droids.
There was a stone sidewalk that ran parallel to the main street and he used this to make his way quickly into the heart of the city. It felt good to be away, to be moving under his own power instead of being carted here and there by the small sleek speeders everyone seemed to use.
The city was a good example of the entire planet. On one hand there was the elite who he’d been brushing elbows with the past few days. On the other were those who lived in the bowels of the city, in the close cramped quarters along the narrow and broken streets. There seemed to be no middle ground. You either had plenty or you didn’t.
The planet had three small moons, two pale white ones and another of a greenish hue, and their light illuminated the darkening path. Here and there streetlights were popping on though they became fewer as Luke walked into the older parts of the city.
Several times as he walked along he caught a glimpse of another shadow whose pace matched his own. After a while, Luke slowed and finally came to a stop. He turned, looking around him. Some shops and houses were darkened but there were a few bright spots here and there, eating places and a bar or two. Luke eyed them speculatively. He wasn’t hungry but he could use a drink.
There was a whisper of movement at his side and Luke felt his back stiffen. Moments before he’d been warm from his brisk walk, now he felt a shiver of coolness run along his skin. He turned his head slowly and eyed the dark figure that stood only a pace or two from his left side.
“Father?”
Luke’s voice was soft, barely above a whisper. Slowly he reached a hand out but then pulled it back quickly, remembering what had happened with his last attempt at contact.
“Don’t go this time. Stay with me…for a while.”
The dark figure regarded him silently, and then took a step forward, closer to Luke. Luke’s eyes widened at the unexpected movement but he forced himself to be still. The man seemed to study him as Luke’s eyes strained to make out a face beneath the dark hood.
“Luke.”
Luke’s eyes closed for the briefest of moments and he felt something in his heart finally break free at the sound of the raspy voice.
“Yes.”
