Tell Me Again, Part 1
Luke Skywalker lay in the big too-soft bed in a beautiful room in a grand palace. He was exhausted after a long day of never-ending meetings and lunches and meeting new people. All in the name of creating a new Republic.
But Luke wasn’t deluding himself. He was no politician. That was Leia’s speciality. And his mother’s. It was only recently that he’d learned of his mother. For a while, she had been only Padme. Then Mon Mothma had revealed that she was actually Padme Naberrie, formerly Queen Amidala of Naboo and then Senator.
And he wondered. Wondered how she had come to meet his father. How they had fallen in love. Unfortunately Mon Mothma hadn’t been able to provide any details. She had remembered Anakin Skywalker and that he had been one of the Jedi who had helped Padme when she’d been targeted by an assassination attempt on Coruscant. There had been rumors about Anakin and Padme but no one seemed to know the real truth about their relationship.
But it wasn’t enough. Luke needed to know more. More about his mother, more about Anakin, more about…why Anakin had turned to the dark side and abandoned everything he believed in. Abandoned Luke. But no, that wasn’t right. Obi-Wan had said Luke and Leia were hidden from their father. He hadn’t even known they’d existed.
Luke sighed and turned restlessly on his side, looking through the open balcony doors. A light wind was blowing, bringing with it the scent of exotic flowers and the scented candles the people here seemed to have everywhere. It was almost overpowering and Luke had a sudden, absurd wish to be back on Tatooine and breathing the dry, cool night air.
Luke pushed the heavy covers back, rose from the bed and padded on bare feet out onto the balcony. The night sky was a strange swirl of purple and blue, he could see distant stars winking now and then. He leaned on the rough stone railing and looked down across the rolling city. As was common in large cities, there seemed to be a thriving nightlife. He almost regretted not accompanying Lando on his “investigation” of it.
He shook his head. What am I doing here? What good am I doing? I should be…somewhere else…doing something more useful. Not sipping tea and biting my tongue every time another “important” person made a derogatory remark about Darth Vader. Why couldn’t they understand that the downfall of the Emperor was due to Vader’s actions? He had saved Luke and in doing so had saved everyone else. Even Leia didn’t understand. Didn’t want to understand and to know what Vader had done.
Suddenly Luke heard a whisper of sound beside him, saw a shadow of movement. Turning his head, his eyes scanned the balcony. He felt a funny tingling sensation and rubbed the back of his neck. More than once lately he’d felt this way but he still hadn’t figured out what was causing it. But it was something familiar…
His eyes finally latched onto a darker shadow in the corner nearest the doorway. He watched silently for a moment, then slowly walked closer. The figure remained still but then the head turned and a pair of pale eyes regarded Luke silently. Blue eyes, Luke thought though he still couldn’t see them clearly. Like…
“Father?”
He stepped nearer then and reached a hand out but the dark figure seemed to fade away and Luke was left empty handed, his heart beating wildly with a painful need.
“Please don’t go…”
Why? Why wouldn’t he talk to him? Didn’t he know how much Luke needed him? Needed to hear his voice, needed to hear him say Luke’s name. Needed him just to be there, as he hadn’t been when he was alive.
“I won’t give up, Father. I’ll keep waiting for you, as long as it takes. I won’t let you go again.”
