Bon grew up under a temple in Kyoto. His father is the High Priest of the Myou Dha Sect (a branch of Buddhism), Suguro Tatsuma. Bon is the only son and heir to the temple- which he's very enthusiastic about.
Bon has been interested in Buddhism since he was a kid and the dedication he shows seems to suggest that his intention is to succeed his father as High Priest at their temple in Kyoto.
Beyond just succession of the position is Bon's wish to restore the temple to its status prior to the Blue Night. Since then, both the temple and Bon's father have fallen to ruin, abandoned by the community that had once supported it due to fear of a repeat of Blue Night. Not only was the temple feared but the Head Priest and the child of the cursed temple were feared and shunned by the community as well. The temple no longer brought in enough revenue to support itself or the family of the high priest, transferring the financial responsibility to his mother and the inn she inherited from her family. Bon, being so attached to the temple and passionate about Buddhism, has since then taken it upon himself restore honor and respect to the temple. He's received criticism from his family and friends about the goal, his father being especially pessimistic by accepting easily the current state of the temple.
Despite criticism, Bon is determined to succeed. He obtains a scholarship to the True Cross Academy, a school for exorcists, and attends against his parents' wishes. He's said that he refuses to return to the temple or the ryokan where he grew up until he's become an exorcist.
He does end up making a return to Kyoto, but only because he is currently participating in a mission through the Academy. The response from members of the temple in his homecoming suggests that he's quite respected in the temple's community, perhaps due to being the son of the head priest.

Bon is really super serious over just about everything. He has a stern expression and an almost delinquent appearance, so he looks serious. He talks about becoming powerful enough to defeat Satan and build up his temple that has fallen into ruin, so he has to be serious to be successful too.
The goal of defeating Satan especially is considered highly unrealistic by most other people- which causes him to stubbornly pursue it more actively than he maybe would otherwise. He has a very defensive attitude and his stubbornness means that he is constantly in conflict with his people- especially his friends and family. He lives up to his assertions though through working hard at True Cross Academy in order to be successful. Bon is top of his class at True Cross Academy thanks to his vigorous study and exercise practices.
Besides being so serious about his work, Bon is so successful at True Cross due to being naturally gifted (or very well practiced) at memorization. He's had a knack for it since he was young, listening to and memorizing as his father would say sutra in the temple. Being good at it now makes him a perfect candidate to become an Aria- an exorcist that fights demons through reciting holy script. It makes him an excellent student as well, but earns him a lot of criticism from his peers (… usually after Bon has made a snide remark about their schoolwork) which can get him riled up even right there in the classroom.
Attending True Cross with Bon are his childhood friends Shima and Konekomaru. The two are apprentices to the same temple as Bon. Among the three, Bon's assertive attitude makes him ringleader of their group (and being tallest, strongest, fastest, smartest probably helps give him that status too). Bon is probably a little more insecure than he'll admit because the three are rarely separated and they share very similar goals in what they'd like from their exorcist training. The two often serve to hold Bon back when he becomes angry and potentially violent.
Bon becomes friends and rivals with Rin Okumura in the beginning of his stay at True Cross Academy. Their relationship starts off rocky due to similar aggressive personalities yet differing approaches to their educations. Bon remarks that Rin should be spending more time studying instead of trying to be cool in front of the girls. Bon's seriousness over school clashes with Rin's preference for learning through doing, which doesn't initially show results in the class grades.
But they both realize (only after everyone around them does) that their personalities are both very similar, and that they also share the same goal to defeat Satan.
Bon's biggest criticism of Rin had been that he would always run off and try to deal with things by himself. Bon appreciates and understands the value of teamwork and has never himself not accepted the help of others- an important lesson emphasized at True Cross.
But Bon later realizes that there's a reason for Rin escaping the group whenever he fights. Since Bon has learned about Rin being the son of Satan- despite what they've been through and their shared goal- Bon becomes distant towards him until Rin is really in trouble.
Although reckless, aggressive, and stubborn when he's confronted, Bon has proven to be very responsible in general. He seems proud but he's not so proud that he won't thank someone for having helped him-- but it seems out of character enough that it usually doesn't go without comment. In fact Bon is relatively modest- he doesn't make a big deal about his good grades and gives credit to all the work that he's done rather than any innate ability. He even confronts classmates when they do become cocky- and in these instances he's shown that he's not afraid to be aggressive even towards girls. Bon doesn't accept people who belittle the abilities or aspirations of others just to make themselves look good.

He is already quite good at the Aria techniques and can successfully recite holy text for use both defensively and offensively thanks to his knack at memorization and ability to recall even under pressure.
Bon's look is distinctively delinquent-inspired despite how serious he is about being a student and becoming an exorcist. He sports a bleached strip down the center of his hair as well as multiple piercings in both ears, and also has a tendency to glare without meaning to.
