wow, overload. been reading over my previous posts a bit, kinda embarrassed about how pessimistic most of them are. so here's to trying not to take out my anger on the internet. after all, what has it ever done to me?
so i am grossly avoiding essays. haha, y'all would be so proud of me if you knew the sheer lengths i go to. i've watched a bunch of noir films and anime, and told myself it was for 'educational purposes,' cause i'm kinda doing one of my essays on noir and cinematic video games. ok so that doesn't really account for the anime. cut me a break here.
not really much other news, other than i'm gonna devote some time on the holidays to learning some cream stuff on guitar, pretty much because clapton is the archetypal blues/rock guitarist, and now i've got the les paul to go with it. i get pretty frustrated that i can't write good lyrics or melodies. so i guess i'll just avoid the issue by playing insane and unpredictable solos whenever i get the urge (incidentally one of the most common criticisms made against cream...hmm).
yeah so the longer this entry gets, the more i realise i have nothing else to say. i haven't been working much, which suits me because i'm pretty sick of the valley, i want something with more definite hours (preferably also something that doesn't occupy my entire weekend).
i've read a bit of stuff recently. 'of mice and men' is of particular note. and it only takes a few hours to get from cover to cover! snap. also, 'lunar park' by bret easton ellis is fascinating and horrific and abrasive, but again, very easy to read and dangerously addictive. i can only think that it would make a better horror movie than 'house of wax' or something. also, going over some of the stories in 'dubliners.' so yeah! that's pretty much that.
also, i don't know if i've mentioned in here, but i've been watching some anime recently, it's pretty cool. i know what you're thinking, and no, i'm not a pubescent asian kid. believe it or not, the stories do actually appeal to a wider audience than the dragon ball z demographic. in particular, elfen lied, neon genesis, planetes, monster (although i am scared of the sheer size of it), ghost in the shell and all the studio ghibli stuff. so if anyone can comment on any of that, or can suggest anything else that is good, i'm all ears.
the old next guestlist is being severely neglected, i'm totally surprised they haven't revoked it yet. surely they must know that rhys and i only keep up the charade to get free entry whenever we feel like it? having said that, i haven't been there in a while. maybe i'm getting too old for it. haha, oh yeah, but martin (my brother, duh) turned 18 last week, we took him to click click and got him hammered. the bathroom sink can attest to that. my personal highlight though was seeing rhys being actually bounced from 7-11. click click is pretty good, although there was a distinct amount of doof the other night. kanye west and the occassional strokes song were perhaps the only saving graces.
while we're on about music. i'm pretty sure my rock to rave tutor doesn't/didn't like me. this is likely only to be made worse as i have not started my essay yet. ahem. anyway so we were having beers after our last tute (as you do) and i asked the forbidden question. 'what kind of music are youuuuuuu into?' i like to think i kinda know my shit, but when his answer eventually came (minimalist techno) i knew i was out of my league. he then proceeded to name drop a bunch of electronic groups (bands?) oh whom i had never heard, and was somewhat embarrassed when he said 'how about you?' and all i could do was to mumble something about indie. but it's ok, i checked out one of those electro bands he told me about when i got home and they weren't any good. the moral of the story is that just because he's doing a phd and he's older than me doesn't mean he knows good music. haha. strange assumption i know. shut up. rock to rave is/was a pretty good class though, and the tutes were pretty good, we all had a good laugh about mobile phone ringtones and gwen stefani and stuff like that. i hope my classes next semester are halfway decent.
on that note. i only have one semester of uni to go. this is strange, since i'm barely 20 years old. i definitely do not feel like i'm about to 'graduate' from anything, let alone university. it's not like my marks are bad (actually they're pretty good considering how little effort i put in) but i dunno. darren gubbins, B.A.. doesn't that sound imposing? watch the fuck out, workforce.
xo.
