I didn't get to go to Baycon because of work, but I made good use of the three day weekend.
Saturday: built a small (5x8) redwood deck between the sheds, installed electrical outlets and lights (powered by extension cord until I get a permit from the city), hung pegboard and started organizing tools. My brother, Dennis, and his S.O. Roxanne came over and we enjoyed barbecue and a fire in the pit.
Sunday: Waterproofed the deck with a clear protective sealant, built the loft in shed #1, bought 60 more hexagon tiles to pave the walkway to the sheds. Saw a 9" Ryobi Band Saw at HomeDepot for only $99. Bought it. Went over to my Brother's house where I helped him cut some firewood out of the pile of lumber left over from his house remodel two years ago. Found some great hardwood pieces which I saved from the fire and took home with me.
Monday: finished the loft (added the plywood decking) and threw a few boxes up there. Wow, room to work in.
I Hurt my right thumb when using the jigsaw to make a plunge-cut through the plywood in the loft (I should have pre-drilled... plunge cuts are dangerous. The picture at the left shows a small chunk of my thumbnail that was punched into my thumb... it didn't bleed, and the small chunk of nail that got punched by the jigsaw is still there, although 2mm closer to my thumb than it's supposed to be... still hurts like heck.) I Temporarily set up a few powertools (Surface planer, drill press, lathe, band saw, Miter Saw) on sawhorses and started playing with the hardwood I brought home from Dennis' house. I laminated one piece of oak into a block, and after the glue dried I turned it on the lathe to make 2 wooden shot glasses and a massager out of it. Another piece of hardwood (I need to find someone to identify what it is) got turned down into a chalice, but man, it was REALLY hard wood. I had to sharpen my chisel several times during the turning, and my forstner bit in the drill press couldn't cut the cup portion out without burning the wood. I'll have to figure out another way to cut out the inside of the cup. I was putting the first coat of urethane on the shot glasses and staining the massager as darkness fell. I Got all the tools put away by 9pm or so.
I fell asleep in front of the big screen in my theater watching A Bridge too Far... never forget our fallen heroes.
All-in all, a really good weekend. ;) I'm glad I didn't get called in to work.
Next weekend: Lay down the rest of the hexagon tiles for the walkway to the sheds, and build a workshop counter-top so I don't have to set up sawhorses to use my power tools.
