Ah! Leasing the equipment makes a ton more sense than buying it, especially in a case like this. And, considering that you live in an area that has a primarily sunny climate, it should be worthwhile for you. I'm not sure how that would work so much up here (I'm near Chicago) because our weather is so spotty, but I agree with the philosophy behind your decision. If it saves you money, do it.

Thank you for doing your part to wean us from our dependecy on foreign oil! :)

That's not why I did it :P

And if I wanted to do something to help wean us off our dependency of foreign oil, It would be lobbying to open up ANWAR to drilling and remove the crippling off-shore drilling constraints... both of which would increase our domestic oil supply, improve our economy, and create jobs.

And yet...

1. You've managed to help wean us from an oil dependence both foreign *and* domestic, which is good - drilling for oil is intrusive, costly, pollutive, and environmentally damaging. Without it we don't have to worry about offshore drilling, destroying native habitats, *or* Middle Eastern politics!

2. Oil will eventually run out, but the sun will keep burning for billions of years!

3. You're contributing to new business, which in turn contributes to job growth, economic stability, tax revenues, and your local community!

4. You're being a smart, educated consumer that knows a deal when he sees one!

5. If this company got any money from the recent stimulus packages (which, being an alternative energy company, they might just have), you're helping support this administration's policies! :D

6. Al Gore loves you! (No, really, he does. He told me.)

7. Oh, and you're helping stop global warming, too! :D

See? All good reasons! You're the best! :D

1. 75% of all oil found on the ocean is the result of natural seepage. Drilling can actually reduce it.

2. Oil is being created constantly. "Dinosaur Juice" is a misnomer. There is a plant that takes Turkey guts and other organic waste and under high temperature and pressure rapidly turns them basically into hydrocarbon fuel. Unlike Coal, Oil travels though the ground and accumulates in pockets, much like water in an aquifer.

3. Perhaps. But how efficiently?

4. Gotta grant him that one, but only because CA energy is so tremendously overtaxed.

5. Now THERE'S a disincentive! But an unproven premise as well.

6. That's an even bigger disincentive! (Al Gore looks at his electric bill, 10 times bigger than his neighbors, and calls the power company, saying "I demand a recount!")

7. No. Refuted by point 2. All energy on earth, even that bound up in fuels, came from the sun.

Upon reading this post, I'm immediately struck with one question, this being "Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?"

The decreasing cost to manufacture ever-more-efficient systems has finally made it cost-efficient for the installer to offer it as a lease and still make money.

Free enterprise and innovation is all it takes for technology to advance and become affordable - not government mandates and over-taxation.
