My first Group Ride

I got up early today and met up at the rally point, a Motorcycle dealer in El Cajon... I didn't really know what to expect... but 150+ GoldWings in one parking lot was not what I had in mind ( Read more... )

I totally agree... which is what I said at the end of my post on what I would do next time.

...but for the record, I wasn't "off-road" and would never thinkof taking my Wing off-roading. There just happened to be some loose dirt on this particular road, and I didn't think (until it happened) that it would cause a problem with my making a U-Turn... and had it been a level surface, my putting my left foot down (since it was a left U-Turn) would have steadied the bike from falling, but being on a hill, my left foot didn't hit the ground until the bike was too far over to stop from falling. The two conditions together (the hill and the loose soil) caused the accident.

In the safety course I took a few months ago, they drilled into you that no one thing causes any accident... it's always a combination of multiple things. The more that you account for, the less likely an accident will occur. I didn't account for the loose soil on the road causing me to lose traction. I didn't account for the U-Turn being on a hill so that I didn't have a safety-position to fall back on.

Important lesson learned. Additional caution now branded into my psyche.

Only time I ever dropped my bike was in a parking lot. That low speed stuff will get you every time. It's because you don't have the gyroscopic forces of the spinning wheels to help you.
