Latest Creation - Bowl & Trivet Set

I haven't had a time to post about this yet, but Monday night I got off work around 5pm, headed home and setup some lights so I could finish a project I've been working on for a few weeks.

The first step, a couple weeks ago, was to cut some strips of various exotic hardwoods. I used Canarywood, Purpleheart, Cocobolo, Walnut, Maple, Paduak, and Oak and cut strips, 2-feet long each, in varying widths.

Then I ran them through the surface planer to make smooth surfaces and glued them together into a board:

After the glue-up of the board was set, I ran that through the planer again to smooth up both sides, then cut Four 6-inch squares using the miter saw. (Sorry, no pics of this step)

1 of these squares I shaped on the router table into a trivet, and added feet made of purpleheart. I sanded it down to 400-grit and finished it with mineral oil (aka: Butcher Block oil).

The other 3 squares, I stacked at 60-degree offset angles and glued that together into a block. Once that was dry, I cut the block on the bandsaw into a 6-inch circle, then mitering about 15 degrees, I cut an inner circle out of that.

I took the inner circle and stacked it on top of the outer circle and glued that up. I didn't take pictures of this, but I talked about this process in an earlier post.

So, last monday, I setup these extra lights in the backyard, pulled out the lathe, and turned that into a bowl... which ended up BEAUTIFUL - look for yourself:

The finish on the bowl is a special woodturner's wax (Hutt Wax) that is "burned" into the wood with a cotton towel while the piece is spinning at high speed on the lathe. The finish instantly hardens a second later as it cools below it's melting point... and the grain and bright colors of the various woods "pop" out at you.

And here is the finished Bowl & Trivet Set that I will have as the centerpiece in my artshow display at Condor:

I'm thinking Minimum Bid of $50 and see how high it goes. It's definitely one of the most beautiful pieces I've created so far.
