I've known for several years that travelling to Mexico is dangerous.
It's a 3rd-world country with a corrupt government, corrupt military, and corrupt police force... all being paid by drug lords and other forms of organized criminals to look the other way, or even to provide protection for their illegal activities.
Here in San Diego, it's hard to ignore the news, since so many people cross the border daily on business or as part of their daily commute... but you'd think that the national feeds would pick up on SOME of this occasionally.
You'd think that at least there'd be a travel warning on the State Department's website, wouldn't you? But no, Mexico is NOT LISTED among the
countries with Travel Warnings.
Think about it... Why would anyone travel to a country where putting extra cash in your wallet, socks, and hiding in other places on your body and in your car is a customary "precaution" in case you run into La Policia? Hello?!? are you Nutz!?!
Well, the media is FINALLY finding this story hard to ignore and hide under the rug.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22527971/ http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/01/07/travel/main3681221.shtml It took a
frontal assault on the Police Station in Rosarito to actually be the catalyst to bring Associated Press to release ANY story about the violence going on there... albeit they didn't start writing about it until 3 weeks later!
Funny how they're still not mentioning that the Rosarito Police are themselves under suspicion... In fact, on December 29th, the federales disarmed the entire police station to run ballistics tests on their weapons to see if they were involved in a drug-related turf war. We'll probably never hear about the results.
The moral of this story: Don't go to Mexico. It's not worth the risk! In fact, if you get as close as San Ysidro, turn around... it's not that safe on this side of the border, either.
