Gen Con UK is Dead

So over on UK Role Players the news has been announced that Gen Con UK is dead, not just 2010 but the chance of any UK convention taking place under the Gen Con banner.

I can't comment personally on Gen Con UK, as I've never been, but I do find that speaking of protection of the brand, rather than propogation and enjoyment of the hobby rather sad, to say the least.

I wonder where that will leave GenCon Oz (which admittedly seems to be more focused in terms of being a media con than a gaming con, although not having been personally, I cannot say if my impression is in fact correct).

I've never been to GenCon either, but in terms of where it leaves the RPG con scene: look back one entry in this blog! So one con out of a huge list won't be happening: and? We're not exactly short of them, are we?

I'm with Jane on this one. I don't think there's any cause for alarm regarding a potential negative impact on the UK convention scene, which looks pretty darned healthy to me. I attended GenCon UK in 2000 and it was a thoroughly miserable experience, so as far as I'm concerned I'd say good riddance and let's just get on with all the other fantastic cons on offer in this country.

Games Expo is the flagship convention, although Dragonmeet is still up there, but too short to be the primo contender. And then there are all those Cons in beachhuts.

It has been years since I attended GenCon UK, and the last one I did was at Minehead. It was a dreadful experience and put me off attending since, especially as I have had more fun at DragonMeet and Games Expo in the meantime.

I would echo gbsteve's comment though. Games Expo is a great convention and really does a good job of showing off the hobby in this country. Plus it is my local convention (being about two bus stops away from where I work).
