Devo-lve

Devo was so wicked last night!

Biff, Melissa and Biff's friend Jeff (who drove) picked me up around 7:30 and we had to drive back up the mountain because Biff forgot the tickets at his house. Haha. Once we got on the road, it took us no time to get there. We listened to Winger as pump-up music, hahahaha. Fucking Winger. I actually saw them live once. Hilarious.

ANYway, the show was at the Phoenix in Toronto, which is a venue that has pretty much never let me down. There are plenty of opportunities for good sightlines, the sound is great and the parking situation is decent. I've previously seen The Psychedelic Furs, KMFDM and Cat Power there... oh and a Rage Against the Machine private show back in the day, hah. RAT-M.

When we got there, the opening act was this guy on stage in an old man costume, who was singing sort of Tim & Eric-type songs about random things, like a fictional band called "Crap Factory" who were "the most awesome hard rock band ever!" with members named things like "Brad Chad" and "Craigingham Lincoln". Accompanying the MC guy was a video screen up and to the right of the stage, that was showing homemade videos to go along with his songs. The videos were pretty much the main act; the guy onstage singing was secondary. It was pretty funny, but I heard a lot of boo-ing (I really think it's so fucking rude when people boo an opening act. Most often, the band you are paying to see hand-picked the opening act, especially a band like Devo who wouldn't just willy-nilly pick ANYone to open for them... so really you're kind of insulting the band you paid to see, by boo-ing their opening act. Argh. It just really bugs me).
This guy's act definitely went along with the vibe of a Devo show, that's for sure. I wish I could remember what he was called.

After he was done, we people-watched a bit, and then on the big video screen, all three video-singles from "Freedom Of Choice" came on, one after another. It went "Girl U Want," "Whip It," and "Freedom Of Choice."
What Devo did, was they played Toronto last night and the night before, and performed one album each night. On Monday night they played the entire "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo" album, and Tuesday night, the night we went, they played all of "Freedom Of Choice". I was pretty happy we went on the night we did because I tend to like "FOC" better.

Jeff was up at the front, he went up there pretty much right away, but Biff, Melissa and I hung out kind of in the middle. Once I maneuvered myself around some tall guys in front of me, I actually had a KICK ASS view for basically the whole show! That NEVER happens (I'm five foot one)! I could see Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Mothersbaugh perfectly.
The lighting was so great onstage, the band was perfect and totally into it, and everyone in the crowd had such a fun time. Like I said, they played all of "FOC" plus "Be Stiff," and "Beautiful World." And there was this sexy librarian babe card girl who would come out and hold up a card with a number corresponding to what track from the album they were going to play next.
It was definitely one of the FUNNEST shows I've ever been too. I was dancing my fucking face off like a maniac. So was Biff! We had a wicked time together.
This was the first time Devo had played in Toronto since I think 1981! So crazy. I'm really glad we went.
