Three Broomsticks - August 9th (Later Evening)

Feb 17, 2007 19:42

Hermione walked into the Three Broomsticks, Ron right behind her. She looked around until she saw a table to suit them-one towards the center of the room-and walked over to take a seat. She thought briefly about waiting to sit and see if Ron would pull her chair out...he hadn't really gotten himself in trouble lately, so that seemed nearly ( Read more... )

For two people who were not in a relationship, they certainly bickered like an old married couple. Theo gestured them both into the room, spoke the spell to light the tourches and closed the door behind them. They were still gauging each other's reaction as Theo put up warding spells and found himself a seat. He had in fact transfigured one of the desks into a chaise and was sitting comfortably before either of them seemed to notice that no one was talking anymore.

Hermione turned around and saw that Theo had made himself comfortable and proceeded to sit down next to him. She left enough room on the end for Ron, but wasn't about to drag him down next to her. She looked back over at Theo and cleared her throat. "Okay, so now that we're being completely secretive and we've drawn the attention of the entire dungeon, what's so taboo about this spell?"

Theo looked over at Weasley. "You are correct. Not a subtle bone in her body." He waited a moment for the other boy to sit but when nothing happened he simply went on. "I never said the spell was taboo. It is a simply energy transfer spell. As with many things magical, it is not the use that can be considered by some to be questionable, but the way that it is used."

Hermione leaned back and bit her lip a little. "Energy transfer...as in life force energy? So you made the pain go away by using up your own energy. That's why you looked so tired..." She forced a rather frizzy mess back behind her ear and rolled the thought over in her mind. "Okay, I can see that it would be dangerous if you were to continue using it until you made yourself pass out or even killed yourself, but most people are smart enough to know when to stop. All forms of magic can drain you."

Ron blinked and jumped on onto the nearest desk. "Wait a second...you mean to tell me I know more than you do on these spells? Merlin, it really must not be in the library...Hermione, the energy isn't necessarily your own. You can drain yourself of energy as the spell performer, either on yourself or someone else, and you take someone else's energy. Dad had to deal with it some at work. Although it wasn't misuse of an artifact, it was misuse of Muggles. Some were falling into comas because some wizard thought it would be funny to ate up their life source rather than his own. It uses up more energy in a Muggle, too, without magic."

Again Theodore was surprised. "Yes. It is not only Muggles that one can direct the spell to. The energy of a magical being is more useful, especially when healing a magical injury. A truly talented caster could draw small bits of energy from a number of sources, or vast amounts from one if the person in question was not well shielded. Of course, if one can take some energy, it might be possible to take it all." Theo looked away from Ron and back toward Hermione. "You can also perform such a spell on yourself, but there are drawbacks."

Hermione frowned at Ron. It always bothered her when he did that. Not that he knew it, that pleased her, but that she didn't. Now she was going to have to beg Theo for a book on the stuff. "Drawbacks?" she asked, returning from her little mental tangent. "What kind of drawbacks?"

"Ones you don't want to mess with, 'Mione," Ron said immediately, leaning back and folding his arms.

"The energy has to come from somewhere. The spell I used on you was specifically for magical pain. Unless it's extreme it is often better to use potions or simply live with it. The body, however, will compensate - take muscle mass or interfere with digestion. If you use it improperly or often enough it could cause blindness, magical inpredictibility, bone loss. Hence, the reason I did not suggest when I performed it, that I teach it to you, but rather than you find me."

Hermione threw Ron a glare, then faced Theo. "Okay, so you do massive damage. Are you suggesting that I couldn't learn this spell and be able to do it properly?" There was a sharp challenge in her voice and all the curiosity had drained from her face to make room for anger. "I can learn this spell, and I don't want to run to you like some silly lost puppy any time I need it. I will probably need it again! I don't need to know all of these energy stealing spells, but this one is important to me. Theo, please! I can handle it!"

Ron ran a hand through his hair and cleared his throat. "Um, 'Mione, maybe Nott knows what he's talking about. He's knows a whole lot more about this stuff than either one of us do..." He squinted his eyes in anticipation of the explosion.

Theo was silent for a long moment. He remembered finding the spell and memorizing the words. He well remembered that he'd used it first for pain that was not magically caused. He'd woken up on the floor later, no better and with a knot on his head. Mastering it for so-called appropriate purposes had taken several tries, one of the first which ended with him vomiting blood. He'd be a stringy kid upon returning third year partly because he'd finally learned to direct the spell enough that it just sped his metabolism, or had a similar effect, to use it only to take the edge off, and then finally, years later, to use it almost never. "I was not implying that you could not learn the spell. Still, it would be best not to try it immediately on oneself because it can be capricious. I would suggest using it on someone else and then only if necessary. Actually, if I were to be entirely practical I would suggest, in the case you are implying, taking the energy from whoever the enemy is at the time."

Ron leaned forward, not enough that he'd fall off the desk, but enough that it would take a minor shift in weight to do so. He looked over at Hermione briefly and bit his lip. He saw how much pain she was in even after she left the hospital, noted her miraculous recovery one afternoon...Nott had really helped. He understood Hermione's overwhelming desire to learn the spell, but...

"Nott, could you teach it to both of us?"

Hermione turned her head so fast she hurt her neck. "Excuse me?" she asked, her eyebrows raised and eyes wide. Her mouth was in a full 'O' shape ready to scream, but she refrained. They'd been doing enough bickering. Instead she turned back to Theo. "What kind of control is required to work this spell? I don't want-"

"-Ron to get in over his head and potentially hurt himself. Save it, Hermione," he snapped. His voice was venom, as was his glare, and he turned back to Theo. "Can you teach both of us?"

Theo raised an eyebrow at the two of them. "Do you treat the hero like he's an idiot too, or is it just this one?" Theodore crossed his legs and steepled his fingers. "The spell isn't in English, but it works better when it is wordless. It takes a fair amount of control, more if used on oneself because it is harder to feel magic move within you than from you. If you were willing to use some type of creature or something to practice on you could do that... like lab rats or whatever. I can try to teach you, although I must admit that I've never really taught anything to anyone."
