Lied to by my employer....

Oregon has this nice little thing called 'at-will' means that an employee or employer can terminate their services at any time without notice. Don't really have to give a reason. You wouldn't really expect an employer to do this, right? I mean, most employers who are ethical, family-oriented companies wouldn't do something like this unless the person is REALLY doing something wrong. And then they'd fire that person, not just 'at-will-terminate' them.

Not me. Six days into my training, and at 12:15pm, my supervisor got an email letting him know that they were letting me go. He had to sit on it for an hour and not tell me. I got into the meeting, and it started out with the head of Human Resources greeting me with, "Hi, Andrew, how as your day?" my reply was, "I don't know. why don't you tell me."

"We've decided that we no longer need your services, and with Oregon's At-Will policy, we're going to let you go."

*shock, dead shock*

"Huh? Can you tell me why?"

Silence on their behalf, shock that I've asked that question.

"No, it's a bad job market at this time, and we've come to the conclusion that your services are no longer neccessary."

-Now, last week, they admitted to us in training that we are beign training to replace the individuals who got fired for bad attendance, etc. My attendance has been perfect. I have 2 years of job skills on the hand, I know about the software system and have upgraded information that most of the other carereps don't. I know how to greet a customer, talk to them, etc. I even know how to properly do most of the procedures they're doing. I have more experience and more knowledge about what they want. and they're letting me go-

Me: "Okay, um, well, this sucks, can you tell me, is there any behavior I can change, anything that I might have done or could have done that I can look into for the future?"

Head of Human Resources: "No, there is nothing that you have done or nothing that you could have done that would have allowed you to keep this job. It's just a bad job market, and we've discovered that we just can't keep you."

Me: Okay, so you're saying then, that I didn't do anything wrong, and I'm not going to be blacklisted by your company, since I've had a firm do that to me before over 14 years ago when I was very young."

Head: "Oh, no, no. by all means, there was nothing you have done or could have done. Feel free to look for work elsewhere."

Guess what? They're hiring. a training class is starting...well...this week.
And they're actively recruiting on their web page.
And they're actively recruiting on the Oregon Web Page www.jobdango.com.

So, I just got lied to by my employer. Or rather, former employer. They lied to me, rather than tell me the reason.

Want to know why?

Here's what I know:

#1 - I have a small disability. It requires me to use a double-eared headset so that I can block out incoming noise from both ears, since coversational or whispers, I can hear. And I'm one of those people that can hear everything, but who has sufficient training to remember it all [makes a pretty effective teacher for high-school, let me tell you]

#2 - After filing and giving them a letter for said disability, I noticed that the only other person in the class with a disability wasn't getting the information he Requested. That means that his vision problem [all he needed was the accessibility on hs computer to be activated so that he could see the page better], wasn't being helped, and on Monday, he didn't show up for work.

#3 - Several of the twenty-one somethings in the classroom believe we were still in high school, in our job environment. Some of them have parents who work at the company.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. But this "family-based, relaxed" employer just lied to my face about the reason I was getting let go. I'm honest, truthfull with them, and they lie to my face about the reason that they're letting me go.

They really can't honestly admit that they're not willing to let me buy my own headset for my disability. That would have the word lawsuit written all over it.

They really can't honestly admit that parental pressure was used to get me removed from the training class, that would also have the word lawsuit written all over it.

Never had any complaints, never got coaching or anything from this family-based company. Located in Oregon. [shakes head] I'm about ready to take up that position in the Armed Services and go off for a few years.

-Andrew
