Alright, this is more or me going crazy than anything else. If you aren't a big fan of Resident Evil look away now.
Looked away? No? Silly peoples.
I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but to start with, a little history. 10 or so years ago the world waited with bated breath as Capcom built the sequal to Resident Evil, the best selling survial horror game. Images and movies of the new game were released, to much acclaim, and people were looking foward to it.
And then all went silent.
Months went past, with only a notification that the release date was being pushed back...a lot. Rumours were rife. The game had been 80% complete. What was going on? Were they adding even more content? More playable characters? Problems with legal?
The answer, it turned out, was that of that 80% already completed 75% got scrapped. The game got rebuilt, virtually from the ground up. A few enemies, a few rooms, and one of the characters were all that was left. Resident Evil 2 was a great success, and a great game, but the first version, now called 1.5, was on many folks minds. What the hell had happened to it?
There are plenty of reasons given why 1.5 wasn't finished. The game being too blue was one. Poor enemy quality in terms of graphics was another, although they were certainly good enough for the PlayStation. Another reason is much of the team working on the project apparently defected to Square, to make Parasite Eve.
Over the years there have been a wealth of images and vidoes gathered from various places, allowing us some idea as to what the game contained. We even have some of the designer's art work. But the actual game has always alluded us...
Until now, apparently.
A site, called the Playsation Museum, has apparently aquired a copy. They released previously unseen footage and images, although it appears it isn't quite what they claim and that it's more likely to be a less complete version of 1.5 than they say.
Still, someone other than Capcom has it. Which means there is a chance, however remote, that it might one day become available for others. Even as a download. Even incomplete.
Hell, I know some folks are offering the guy cashy money. And I'm not talking a few dollars...I mean a few hundred dollars. For an incomplete PS game. And I can understand that. Really, if I wasn't waiting to see how it went I'd be thinking of offering the guy money myself.
Y'see, it's something I and my fellow headcases have wanted for years. It, almost certainly, isn't going to really be worth the money we'd offer in terms of gameplay, or graphics, or storyline. And yet...the game itself? Yes. It would be worth the money. It would be worth quite a lot. The mere satisfaction of playing it, after all this time, finding out what's happening, what they did, how it works and all that...damn. It would be worth it.
