Why are people baulking at using the "R-word" to describe the troubles in The Shire? There are problems with gangs of Lebanese and Middle Eastern youths. They are racists who target white Australians for their violent attacks. Then there are the thugs of the Shire. They are racists who have been trying to keep Cronulla beach a whites-only enclave through systematic harrassment of non-whites for many years and who are now, it seems, prepared to turn to violence also. Both groups need to be acknowledged as a problem and dealt with accordingly.
