I am actually reading Twilight. I am so ashamed.
And more ashamed, perhaps, that I don't find it entirely detestable. I saw the movie and liked it more than I thought I would. (Admittedly, I expected it to be awful. So any tiny moment of semi-decentness stood out like a shiny little beacon.) But now I'm reading the book. Or, rather, the sequel.
What the hell, brain?
It's certainly not a literary work of genius. The characters are, at best, one dimensional. The prose is static and repetitive, (yet weirdly readable). The dialogue... actually, the dialogue is okay. The plot is suspect, but highly entertaining.
The central romance is the worst kind of abusive relationship (i.e. the subtle kind that thinks it's entirely fine), but the sheer angst is pretty unparalleled. I think Edward Cullen could give Kakashi a run for his money.
And I can't stop reading it.
*headdesk*
In other news, my two main achievements this week are blue toilet water and a haircut. The first comes from a neat little cleaning device that looks like a squathockey puck. You toss it into the cistern and it dissolves over several weeks, releasing cleaner steadily into the water. Horrible for the environment, I don't doubt, but much less effort than bleach and we get blue toilet water.
The haircut is fairly self-explanatory. Though I've noticed that my hair seems to be getting progressively darker. It was white-blond when I was a kid, blond when I was a teenager, and now it's crossing the line into light brown. The dark brown dye I tried a month back is pretty well grown out, and the haircut finished off most of it. But I still hair a fair amount left on top, so I've got this weird duel colour going on at the moment: light on the back and sides, darker on top. It's... interesting, but I think I like it.
Still, it's weird to be blond all your life and realize you're suddenly not.
(But hey, brown hair and blue eyes is pretty arresting, right? I can live with that.)
kilerkki earned some Best Person In The World Ever points by not only introducing me to
Shane, (which is (a) a FANTASTIC western novel, and (b) has so much pure man!love in it I could weep) but also by actually buying me a copy when it turned out the online version only went up to page 41 and left out all the best bits. I should get it in five days or so, and I can't wait. (See? I still read actual literature!)
Last, and perhaps best of all, JB's back online and definitely speaking to me. She's dying a death of editing and I'm working my ass off, so we haven't seen a lot of each other, but at least she's around and I can pretend really hard that I didn't freak out in a semi-public forum.
And this weekend I write my final essay and officially win FIVE MONTHS OF FREEDOM. \o/
