Character: Kurosaki Ichigo
Canon: Bleach
Point in canon: Chapter 408
Age: 16
Personality: If there is one thing that can be said clearly about Ichigo, he is the kind of person who abides by his own set of rules. While he may follow the rules that flow along with his sense of morality, he has no problem with breaking those that go against it. That being said, he is a highly independent person with a strong desire to protect those in front of him or close to him who need protection. However, sacrifice is not something that he finds honorable. Moreover, if a friend/comrade is forced to sacrifice themselves for his sake, he believes it unforgivably pathetic - on both his and his friend’s/comrade’s behalf.
During a fight, he prefers to face his opponent head on with full consciousness. For this reason, he is quite hesitant to use his hollow form in order to win a fight. As his hollow form is quite like the shadow (opposite) of himself, he may also fear what may happen to his friends/comrades around him when the hollow form is in control. Even so, he is more likely to seek a secluded area rather than try to deny the existence of his shadowed hollow form.
Ichigo is extremely short-tempered, impatient, and has a tendency to completely disregard interpersonal formalities. Though he used to be unable to verbalize his emotions well, it is an area he’s grown in leaps and bounds since the beginning of the series. As a result, most of his efforts end up being extremely awkward and clumsy. Because of this, he tends to end up understating his emotions quite often. While he may appear to be quite cold and distant claiming to only know someone as an acquaintance, he actually cares quite deeply for them as friends.
History: Kurosaki Ichigo is the first born son of Kurosaki Isshin, a former shinigami of the Soul Society, and Kurosaki Masaki, a hollow. His father runs a small clinic, called Kurosaki Clinic. For as long as he can recall, he has been able to see spirits as clearly as if they were alive. Because of this, he could not tell the difference between the living and the dead. He was also born with his strawberry coloured hair, and he was often bullied as a child because of its strange colour.
His sisters, Karin and Yuzu (twins), were born when he was four years old. (Though Karin can see spirits as vague shapes, Yuzu is unable to see spirits at all.) It was at this time that he joined a karate dojo, vowing to become the sort of older brother who could protect his two younger sisters. He met Arisawa Tatsuki, one of his karate classmates, and they soon became friends. She was much stronger than him at karate, and would come to his aid whenever he was being bullied.
One rainy day, when walking home with his mother from karate practice, Ichigo saw what he thought to be a girl about to jump into the overflowing river. He leapt over the guard railing with the thought of protecting her, but it turned out that she was the visage of a Grand Fisher hollow used to lure unsuspecting souls on which it could feed. When Ichigo came to later, he found his mother lying on top of him, dead. He was nine years old.
When he was twelve one morning before the clinic was open, he opened the door to find a girl carrying her brother, who was seriously injured in a car accident, on her back. The Kurosaki Clinic did not have the necessary equipment to save him, and he died before the ambulance to transfer him to Karakura Hospital could arrive. Only later did he learn that the girl was Inoue Orihime.
One night, Ichigo sees a strange black-clothed figure, Kuchiki Rukia, enter his bedroom through the wall. Though quite confused at her strange appearance, he reacts quickly and without thinking, kicking her and accusing her of being a burglar. When his father comes upstairs to check on the racket, however, Isshin states that he sees no one. It is then that Rukia explains that she is a Shinigami hunting for a hollow, an empty spirit that must consume other spirits in order to fill the void.
When Ichigo refuses to believe Rukia’s story, Rukia responds by restraining him with a basic demon form. As she continues her explanation, though, the hollow arrives at the Kurosaki Clinic undetected, attacking Ichigo’s family. Karin enters the room, glad that Ichigo is yet unharmed and telling him to run away. Enraged by this, Ichigo breaks the demon art restraints bare handed, grabbing a baseball bat and rushing down to protect his family. He finds the hollow downstairs attacking Yuzu, and he rushes forth to save her. However, he is knocked away by the hollow in an instant, breaking the bat.
Rukia, having overcome her shock at Ichigo’s spiritual strength, intervenes, cutting off the hollow’s arm and saving Yuzu. She mentions to Ichigo that all of his family is still alive; however, the hollow most likely attacked his house because of Ichigo’s unusually high spiritual concentration. Ichigo takes this to mean he is to blame for the incident. The hollow uses this opportunity to knock Rukia aside and turn its attack towards Ichigo.
Without thinking, Ichigo tries to take the hollow on bare handed. Rukia jumps in front, taking the brunt of the hollow’s attack. Unable to fight, Rukia suggests that Ichigo take part of her Shinigami powers and fight the hollow himself. When he thinks of his family being worried about him when their lives are in danger, he cannot bear to stand the thought of being afraid for himself. Instead of taking half of Rukia’s power, however, he ends up taking most of her Shinigami powers, defeating the hollow easily.
Since he had taken most of Rukia’s power, Ichigo must in turn work as a Shinigami - an arrangement which he first refused. One of the first hollows he fights is actually Orihime’s brother who was attacking Orihime. Another is a hollow that was chasing a bird that Chad was protecting.
On the supposed sixth anniversary of his mother’s death, Ichigo runs into the hollow that killed his mother, the Grand Fisher (a hollow that had been feeding off spirits and Shinigami for nearly fifty years). When he found out that the ghost he saw the evening his mother died was a hollow, he resolves to fight the battle alone whether out of a sense of pride or revenge. Up until that point, he had solely blamed himself for his mother’s death. However, he was only able to severely injure the hollow.
In front of his mother’s grave, Isshin reminds Ichigo not to blame himself for his mother’s death. Instead, Masaki was the sort of person to die protecting her son; and Ichigo is the sort of man that Masaki would die protecting.
Ichigo continues fighting hollows. As a result of fighting hollows around his friends, though, they were affected by his overflowing spiritual energy and became able to see vague shapes of spirits and Shinigami (though some like Karin and Orihime were able to see both forms clearly). However, there is a streak of hollow reports where Ichigo and Rukia find no hollow. Finally, they meet Ishida Uryuu, a Quincy (a human archer who can fight and kill hollows with spiritual energy) who has been disposing of the supposed missing hollows.
Ishida despises Shinigami, declaring them useless. He challenges Ichigo to a battle, provoking Ichigo until he accepts without thinking. However, Ishida planned to use hollow bait to attract hollows as targets. This sort of competition does not sit well with Ichigo at all since it involves innocent people. Instead, Ichigo grew tired of listening to Ishida’s story and told him that they should fight on a united front instead of battling as Shinigami vs. Quincy. Also, he points out to Ishida that Ichigo fights because he wants to protect a mountainload of people, but the way Ishida is fighting is a way to get a mountainload of people hurt.
While they are arguing and fighting hollows, a huge hollow called a Menos Grande appears. It is in this fight that Ishida realized that Ichigo’s high spiritual power is actually at its lowest possible level. Ichigo was able to single handedly repel the Menos Grande’s Cero and injure it to an extent that it withdrew.
After the battle with the Menos Grande had safely ended, Rukia had left suddenly, leaving a note in cryptic writing, in the hopes that she would be long gone by the time Ichigo deciphered it. When he did figure out that the note told him to go into hiding and forget her, he became angry that she had tried to take on all of the responsibility for giving him Shinigami powers. Instead, he tried to find her since she was in trouble because of him. However, he ran into Renji and Byakuya of the Shinigami Sixth Squad who had come to take her back to the Soul Society. Though he fought well against Renji, Byakuya stepped in and ended the battle quickly. In order to save Ichigo, Rukia told him not to follow her, distancing herself emotionally by changing her entire demeanor towards him.
After Rukia had been taken back to the Soul Society by Byakuya and Renji, Urahara appeared and healed both Ichigo and Ishida. It was after this that Ichigo was able to reflect upon his frustration and aggravation that she was forced to sacrfice herself for his sake. As a result, he and his friends (Chad, Ishida, and Orihime) underwent severe training for 10 days to increase their skills.
During this training, Ichigo underwent a hollowfication process in order to gain strength. This separated the hollow side of his power from the Shinigami side, creating two opposites out of the single reservoir of power. He was able to regain control after this hollowfication process; however, whenever the hollow side took over, he was still completely out of control until he could force his consciousness to regain control.
Ichigo then travelled to the Soul Society in order to save Rukia from execution. He got separated from the others in his group and fought many Shinigami trying to make his way toward Rukia. He was able to save her, defeating Byakuya in battle. However, during the chaos of the politics of the Soul Society, Aizen, Tosen, and Gin separated and left the Soul Society for Hueco Mundo in search of more power supposedly.
After Ichigo and his friends returned to Karakura, the town was attacked by Arrancar, really powerful hollows from Hueco Mundo. Seemingly by coincidence, Ichigo met up with Shinji Hirako, the previous Shinigami captain of the Fifth Squad who had overcome hollowfication as well, and his group. He trained with them to gain a bit more control of the hollow side of his power; however, he still feared the hollow side of himself.
During this, Orihime runs into Ulquiorra, an arrancar. He demands that she return with him to Hueco Mundo, threatening the lives of her friends. Wishing to not be a burden, she follows him. When Ichigo finds out, he immediately gathers his friends to travel to Hueco Mundo and bring her back without paying any mind as to why she might have done such a thing.
During his fight with Ulquiorra, Ichigo showed an unshakeable resolve to win. Even when Ulquiorra fully reveals his true hollow form, Ichigo neither feared fighting nor was intending to sacrifice his life, stating that he will win because he has to win. During this time, Orihime and Ishida arrived to see that Ulquiorra had blown a hole in his chest.
Orihime was devastated, unsure of what to do and screaming for Ichigo to help her. Seemingly motivated by this, Ichigo transformed into his own full hollow-form. He easily bests Ulquorra, but kept attacking. When Ishida tried to stop Ichigo, he also turned to attack Ishida. While Ichigo is attacking Ishida, Ulquiorra cuts off the horn of the mask, ultimately breaking the mask and causing Ichigo to return to his human form. When he sees the damage his hollow form had committed however, Ichigo was both horrified and frustrated. Though he insisted to fight Ulquiorra equally, it was too late and Ulquiorra faded away into ash.
Ichigo then travels from Hueco Mundo with Unohana while she restores his spiritual energy. When they arrive, Ichigo joins the fight with the remaining Shinigami against Aizen. During this fight, Ichigo finds out that he is the son of a shinigami and hollow. However, he decides that his father will tell Ichigo about it when he is ready, recalling when Rukia did the same for him.
After Aizen completes his transformation though, Ichigo looses his resolve to fight since he is able to read Aizen’s spiritual pressure. However, thanks to Isshin’s words, Ichigo was able to at least regain the desire to protect those in Karakura.
On his way to the real Karakura, Ichigo was stopped by his father in the gateway to train and obtain the final Getsuga Tenshou. In order to do this, Ichigo was meant to meditate in order to communicate with his zanpakuto.
Abilities: Flash Steps - the ability to travel step very quickly, appearing to disappear and reappear in another spot.
Zanpakuto - his Shinigami sword in its normal form is ridiculously huge. The size of the sword is supposedly relative to the amount of spiritual power.
Shikai - his true form of his sword. It is still ridiculously huge and looks more like a cleaver than a sword.
Getsuga Tenshou - spiritual power beam from his blade in the shape of the crescent moon.
Bankai - Tensa Zangetsu - his sword shrinks down to the size of a Japanese long sword, the blade black.
Kuroi Getsuga - the regular Getsuga Tenshou attack becomes black.
Hollowfication - the process where Ichigo’s hollow power takes over. His mask has taken several forms during the progression of his powers. Presently, the mask has black stropes and horns.
Items brought along: Zangetsu
Shinigami clothes
street clothes
Substitute Shinigami Badge (allows him to separate into his Shinigami form without Rukia or Kon)
Stigma: Ichigo was born the child of a Shinigami and Hollow. Until his training with Urahara, these seemingly paradoxical powers had existed as one seamless reservoir within himself. However, every time he underwent training, the shinigami side and hollow side of his power became disjointed, gradually drifting apart. Because of this, he became able to see the vast difference in the nature of both powers, and he came to fear the hollow side of himself. Most of all, he fears losing control and hurting those he loves. Until he can reconcile the schism within himself, that fear will always be present, no matter how strong his denial of its existence.

Regular Post: [opens his eyes and blinks a few times]
…Huh? Where the hell…?
[glances over at the bag next to him on the bench, then looks back over the buildings once more]
[stands up and begins walking down the street to his right]
Well… Old Man Zangetsu’s gotta be somewhere around here…
Log Post: A sound like water reverberated dimly on the peripheral echoes of Ichigo’s consciousness. A vague thought floated to the surface of his mind, 'I must have fallen asleep or something.' As he opened his eyes, a dull coloured concrete wall slowly came into focus. He could feel the boards of the bench underneath him pressing into his back, his legs sprawled out carelessly in front of him. Pushing his heels into the dusty ground, he sat up straighter.
“…Huh? Where the hell...?”
He glanced at his surroundings quickly, brown eyes catching on the bag sitting directly next to him on the bench. He frowned at it, briefly wondering why someone would have left their shopping bag at the bust stop. He looked up at the roofs of the buildings around him.
'They’re definitely shorter than I remember.'
Standing up from the bench, Ichigo picked up his sword and began walking down the street to his right. He wondered if he was simply imagining things.
“Well,… Old Man Zangetsu’s gotta be around here somewhere…” he said to himself, deliberately ignoring the eerie feeling in the corner of his mind when the sound of his voice stopped dead in the heavy atmosphere.
