Woo! Update!
Well lately I've been thinking about world events and of course with a consiprical mindset coupled with cinematic influences (read: Red Dawn and War of the Worlds), I have a distinct and unnerving feeling that we are going to be 'invaded' (not by aliens you!) in the near future.
While it is true that our military is second to none - at least on record, it is also true that we have -always- been the aggressor. We have never defended our country against a foe since it's formation (no offense, but the Native Americans were to put mildly, slaughtered). As a nation of civilians we are weak. While the right for an individual to bear arms is a very strong deterrent - every civilian can be armed, not just those in militias - of an invading force, most are not trained in proper use nor basic tactics. That along with the overall physical state which people are in, remind me of the Roman Empire during it's 'Golden Age'. What happened? The people grew fat, and lazy - absorbed in their affluence - and the military became weakened after having no foes to 'train' upon. And then the Mongol's came and created an empire that stretched almost all of Eurasia, by using very efficient tactics.
'Luckily' for us though out the history of this nation, our military has always been in conflict without so much as a 10 year gap between separate ones. Unfortunately, the 'Mongol hordes' may once again be upon the Western Empire. It is a fact that due to job out-sourcing, if there was an embargo with China, the US could -barely- have enough steel to create weapons. A mere 30 years ago, the US was one of the biggest exporters of steel, and now we are one of the biggest importers. This goes for -many- critical resources for both military and civilian uses. China may very well achieve dominance of the US, and they don't even have to fire a shot.
Heh. Now think if it did get physical - and for this speculation I won't contribute the effects of nuclear warfare, what use is crushing a nation and assuming your doesn't, when you can't use their resources? They have about 1.2 BILLION people. If pressed I'm sure that any nation can use 60% of their population for warfare. That's 720 million soldiers. The entire American population is roughly 250 million, though I'm not sure, it could be up to 300 million. That's about a 2.5:1 ratio there. We could easily be overrun by sheer numbers. Add to that depleted strategic resources - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
Another factor to consider - with all this job outsourcing, we effectively lower the 'skill level' and general experience of the technical end of the equation. That means, we might also lose the technological edge we've held since the end of WW2.
It isn't pretty. I'm sure that if Americans switch from a self-indulging state of mind to one more spartan, we could reclaim, at least economic, control. But I know it isn't going to happen without an event of 9/11 scale.
Add to this the issues with the middle east, you really have to ask - WTF are our leaders thinking by not only reducing world favor of the US to abysmal levels, but also giving kickbacks to their 'supporters'. Eg. There is a deal with India, who did -not- sign the anti-nuclear proliferation treaty, for the US to build nuclear power plants, which gives some industry buddies of Bush's much chink in their pocket - not like they really needed more. Utterly irresponsible.
On that note, has anyone noticed that -every- President has come from rich wealthy influential families, besides for being white and male? And that most are basically groomed to be. One could take the conspiracy theories of the Illuminati almost seriously. A secret society that controls the world like puppet masters and have, according to my knowledge of the theory, been grooming mankind since the medieval ages for a world order.
In any case, it seems that another World War is looming. If we are lucky, Einstein will have been correct for saying, "I do not know what weapons World War 3 will use, but the one after will be done with stones and clubs." The text is off, but it's something of that nature.
On an unrelated subject, aren't cows simply awesome? If one creature could be considered God's gift to man, it would have to be the bovine. Alive, it eats weeds, and creates fertilizer as well as milk. When killed, it can be used completely for food, tools, and clothing. Individual organs are considered specialties in varying countries, and even the intestine can be used - sausage anyone? Overall an incredibly useful creature.
